Vikki's Musings

This is the first book I have read by Jill Sanders. When I received an invitation from the publisher to read it in exchange for an honest review, the book description sounded like it would be a light-hearted, humor story. Unlucky in Love is a delight romance with engaging characters.

Kristen Collins believes she is cursed. She has never fallen in love, only infatuation. When her recent boyfriend steals all her belongings, she is not surprised. She has been unlucky in the love department since grade school. Between her string of bad luck, she is wary of the new guy in her office, sure he will bring her heartache. Besides, he doesn’t look like her type.

Aiden Scott is brought in to Row and Stein Architecture because the owners are ready to retire. While he is interested, he wants time to research the company, hence the undercover position in the office. When he meets Kristen, he is immediately smitten. There’s one problem, he can’t tell her the truth because he has promised to remain silent until he decided whether he wants to buy the partners out. Can he capture Kristen’s heart as she has captured his, or will his secret tear them apart?

This novel is definitely a humorous read. The pacing is steady and the story line is fairly unique. The first part of the book gave me the impression this would be more chick-lit than romance, but I was pulled into the story. As the book unfolds, it started to feel a little superficial, without much depth. The character development left me wanting more.

Kristen Collins is an engaging, funny character. I liked her from the first page. She is prone to lots of mishaps. She’s a bit of a flighty character when it comes to financial decisions and her love life. She has a habit of picking out men that are not stellar, and she makes impulse purchases, such as a sports car when she rarely drives anywhere. I kept wanting to really get into her head to truly understand what made her tick. That never happened. The cursed part of the story fell flat, and I didn’t buy it.

Aiden Scott’s character is engaging, and I liked him quite a bit. He’s a good guy who supports worthwhile causes and is loyal to his family and friends. Here again, I never fully became enmeshed in his character. There is very little introspection, so I never saw any depth.

I did enjoy this book, and found myself actually laughing out loud on more than one occasion. Some of Kristen’s mishaps had me in stitches. Aiden is a stand up guy and the chemistry between the two is strong. I could easily see them falling in love and very much wanted them to have their happy ending.

If you are looking for a light-hearted romance with lots of humorous scenes and likeable characters, then I suggest you give Unlucky in Love a try. The book is well-written and the flow is smooth, which makes it an enjoyable read. Happy reading!
