Cold Nose, Warm Heart by Mara Wells

Publisher & Release: Sourcebooks, January 28, 2020

Time and setting:  Present Day, Miami

Genre: Contemporary romance/Romantic comedy

Length: 384 Pages

Heat Level: 1 Flame

Rating: 4.5 Gold Crowns

Book Description:

A poodle, a black lab and a Chihuahua walk into a dog park...
All Caleb Donovan has to do to redeem his family name is take a rundown Miami Beach apartment building and turn it into luxury condos. Easy, right?
Unfortunately, that would also turn the local dog park into a parking lot and the neighbors aren't having it. Caleb is faced with outright revolt, led by smart, beautiful building manager Riley Carson and her poodle, LouLou.
For Caleb, this project should have been a slam dunk. But even more challenging than the neighborhood resistance is the mutual attraction between him and Riley. It would be so much easier just to stay enemies.
Can Riley and her canine sidekick convince Caleb that what's best for business isn't always best for the heart?

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks goes to the publisher, via Net-Galley, for the chance to read and review Cold Nose, Warm Heart by Mara Wells in advance of publication. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.

Cold Nose, Warm Heart is a light-hearted read with the most adorable dog who stole my heart. The plot is unique with the characters joining together to build a dog park for the animals in the neighborhood. I LOVED that aspect of the story. The pacing is perfect for this book and kept me engaged from start to finish.

Riley’s the heroine and stole my heart from the first page. I loved how she kicked her shoes off and had a pile by her door. She got a raw deal when Donovan Resorts shut down. The owner ended up in jail, and she loses her position as assistant manager.

Now she’s managing a 55+ rundown condo in Miami with lots of issues. I loved her tender care for her grandmother and the other seniors in the complex. Her loving relationship with her poodle, LouLou is endearing. I could feel her anxiety when she finds out her grandmother doesn’t own the condo complex.

Caleb Donovan is the hero with lots of problems. His father’s in prison, and his grandfather challenges him the take on the project to turn the George into a first-class Condo Complex in Miami, but there is a major problem. He must get his half-brother to agree to help him. That will be nearly impossible. When he arrives, he is bent on firing the manager, but when he meets Riley, he’s wowed by her, yet he blurts out “you’re fired.” That starts a relationship with lots of tension.

The romance between Riley and Caleb is delightful and at times emotional. They have a huge obstacle that should keep them apart, and on completely different sides, but the chemistry is so strong, they both step over the divide constantly. I thoroughly enjoyed their love story and wanted them to find a way to make it work.

If you enjoy contemporary romance with plenty of humorous moments, an array of adorable fur-babies, and characters that will steal your heart, then you’ll love Cold Nose, Warm Heart as much as I did. I can’t wait to read the next book in this wonderful series. I believe this may be a debut novel for Ms. Wells, and it’s very well-written with fantastic characters. I recommend this book to all animal lovers. It’s sure to enchant you. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

This is the second book by Lucy Gilmore and even more delightful than the first. When I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, to read and review Ms. Gilmore’s second novel in her Forever Home series, I eagerly accepted. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.

Puppy Christmas is a fast-paced romance with lots of laugh-out-loud moments. The characters are engaging, and the plot is unique. The bantering between the hero and heroine is natural and delightful. Ms. Gilmore certainly tells an amusing, yet heartfelt story, and her writing is emotionally-charged.

Lila Vasquez is an endearing heroine with a little bit of a quirky personality. Her love for her work comes through loud and clear and is her only focus when she meets Ford. From the first scene, I fell in love with her. Her willingness to help a little girl with a disability and pretend she’s a princess when that’s the last thing Lila wants, stole my heart. That took her way out of her comfort zone. Her shy manner and insecurities with Ford endeared her to me as well.

Ford Ford––and yes, the hero’s name is Ford Ford––is a geeky, yet loveable hero. His strong desire to do right by his daughter is so admirable. He’s sacrificed everything for his six-year-old. His easy, flirty banter covers up his feelings of inadequacy. He has his own insecurities since his wife walked out on him and their disabled daughter when Emily was only a few months old. I truly enjoyed his amorous ways of wooing Lila.

The romance between Lila and Ford is more sexual than I initially expected. The passion ignites fairly quickly and burns hot. It’s playful and fun. I found Ford’s need to spell out curse words, so his daughter would not repeat them adorable, and it added to my enjoyment of this story.

If you’re looking for a romance that will put a smile on your face and have you chuckling as you read, while still managing to touch on plenty of deep emotion, then you will love Puppy Christmas. I can’t wait to read the next book in this delightfully funny series. Happy reading!

EXCERPT:

“We’re going to the symphony. We’re visiting art galleries and sipping overpriced white wine. Oh, I’ve got it! You’re taking me to the fanciest store in the city and buying me a new dress. I’ll be like Pretty Woman, except you won’t have to pay me fors-e-x later.”
Ford cast a sidelong look at Lila. She’d caught her lower lip between her teeth, but she didn’t look up from the phone in her lap.
“I like to make the first one free to get the ladies hooked,” he explained. “Then I ratchet up the price accordingly.”
That didn’t get her to take the bait, either. “Turn right at the next intersection,” she instructed him. “Parking should be in the big lot on the right. And for the record, I don’t think that’s a very good way to run your gigolo business. Why would the cow pay for milk after the fact?”
“The cow isn’t the one paying for the milk. The cow is the one providing it.” He clucked his tongue and shook his head. “And here I thought you were supposed to be the smart one.”
That got her to glance up, her gaze sharp. “I never said that.”
“No, you didn’t,” he agreed cheerfully as he pulled his minivan into the last of a row of cars. “But that doesn’t make it any less true.”
She had no response to this, which was just as well since they’d arrived at their mystery destination. He had no idea where they were or why, but he didn’t care. The fact that he was on an actual date with Lila was enough.
It wasn’t just any date, either. He’d had to lift nary a finger to make it happen. Apparently, Lila took her role as invitee very seriously. From dropping Emily off at her mom’s house to planning the evening from start to finish, she’d handled everything on her own. All Ford had to do was doll himself up and wait to be whisked away for an evening of romantic bliss.
It was a new experience for him—and a delightful one. Lila was wooing him. Lila was wooing him hard.
He, too, was hard just thinking about it.
Although that wasn’t really fair. He’d been in the same state of agonized anticipation for days. No number of cold showers or hot showers or short, frantic showers with his cock in his hand had helped. Nor had Lila’s constant presence in his home. How she managed to sit with his daughter and Jeeves, cool and collected as she went through the steps of puppy training, was a mystery.
“Here. We’re going to need this.” Lila reached into the pocket of the white wool coat she wore and handed him a flask. “It’s like fifteen degrees outside. It’s straight bourbon, in case you’re wondering.”
“You remembered,” he said as he accepted the flask and took a long pull. “My vice of choice.”
It wasn’t the cheap stuff, either. The woodsy-sweet taste coated his tongue and throat, the warm burn making him feel almost giddy.
“I have my occasional value,” she admitted. “Remembering things in painstaking detail doesn’t make me a very endearing person, but it does make me a useful one.”
He opened his mouth to argue, to tell her that her value lay primarily in her ability to make him feel relaxed and happy and like a hot-blooded man again, but he didn’t have a chance to get the words out before she pulled a white knit cap over her head and secured her gloves onto her hands.
Lila was a stunning woman almost all the time, her poise and grace so ingrained that he doubted she was aware of them, but there was something about the way the cap framed her face that almost undid him. She looked absurdly youthful, her cheeks flushed from the bourbon and the cold and—he hoped—the company.
Unable to help himself, he leaned across the console and dropped a kiss onto her slightly parted lips. Surprise rendered her delightfully malleable, her mouth giving way to his for a full ten seconds before she realized what was happening and kissed him back. That was delightful, too, but for entirely different reasons—most of which had to do with the fact that she wasn’t about to let him have his wicked way with her without giving him his own back again. In fact, that was a thing she’d done since the day they’d first met. He could, on occasion, catch her off guard, but it rarely lasted for long.
She proved it by deepening the kiss. The assault of her tongue and the warm press of her mouth against his invoked every sense he had—taste and smell and glorious touch. She even released a soft moan into his mouth that made his head whir with possibilities.
And then she ended it as quickly as it began.
“Let’s skip the date,” he said before he’d even managed to open his eyes again. “I don’t care if we’re flying to the Eiffel Tower on a private jet run entirely on champagne. Let’s stay in this van and make out instead.”
She didn’t move. “You don’t want to see what I have planned?”
He’d opened his eyes by this time, but the parking lot lighting was dim, and what little vision he did have was obscured by the stars dazzling his vision. Actual g-o-d-d-a-m-n stars.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Length: 260 Pages

Heat Level: 1 Flame

Rating: 4 Gold Crowns

Book Description:

Ben Dalton has always been honest, except where his heart is concerned. He’s been in love with his best friend—saucy, smart-mouthed Aurelia Stark—forever. But Ben’s a planner, and timing has never been on his side. When he finally decides to make his move, Aurelia beats him to the punch with a move of her own—to a different town.
Aurelia loves her new life in the charming town of Harmony Pointe. She has a great apartment and her very own bookstore, and best of all, the sinfully hot, commitment-phobic friend she’s crushed on for years is no longer just around the corner. Maybe she’ll finally be able to leave her unrequited love behind and move on.
But when a baby is left on Ben’s front porch—a baby that is presumably his—Aurelia is there for him. Neither one knows the first thing about babies, but how hard can it be? Ben and Aurelia are catapulted into a world of love, laughter, and tracking down the baby mama, and it might even add up to a very happily ever after… just not one either of them expects.

Vikki’s Musings

This is the second book I’ve read by Melissa Foster. I was not overly fond of that previous book, so I hesitated before accepting the request from the publisher, via Net-Galley, to read and review for my blog. Wow, I’m so glad I accepted! My opinions are my own and are not influence in any way.

Call Her Mine is a delightfully humorous romance with engaging characters. It had plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, along with deeply emotional scenes as well, especially toward the end. While the angst is practically nil, that didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of this story. For me, so often there is way too much angst in many contemporary romances.

Some reviewers didn’t enjoy the part of the plot that centered around learning to care for a newborn, but I thoroughly enjoyed those scenes. Many of those had me chuckling at their antics, I easily identified with the first experiences of caring for a baby. Now I do agree that things work out, perhaps a bit too easily between Ben and Aurelia, and at times, their relationship is a tad too sweet, which is why this didn’t earn my top rating.

Aurelia’s character runs true to her chosen profession. She owns a bookstore and, is of course, a bookworm as you would expect, but there’s more to her character than that. She’s clearly a born entrepreneur, finding a niche is a dying market. She shows great originality with her story times, which draws in her customers. Her immediately desire to help Ben with Bea, felt very real to me. I would have fallen instantly in love with the adorable baby as well, and I could understand her fast acceptance when she learns her unrequited feelings for Ben are returned.

Ben is a drool-worthy hero with his dark good looks. His immediate acceptance that the baby could be his was a tad unrealistic, since he’s apparently always used protection. His reasoning behind finding Bea’s mom is solely based on assuring his full custody of the infant, not because he doesn’t want the sweet baby. While all that is admirable, it would have been more realistic if he’d at least second guessed his feelings a bit.

The romance between Ben and Aurelia moves incredibly fast. However, they have been best friends for quite some time. It’s not like they have to get to know each other. It’s more a matter of each character not wanting to do anything that could potentially destroy their close relationship. Let’s face it, when sex enters, it completely changes the dynamics of any relationship. I would have enjoyed a bit more internal conflict regarding those changes.

While I did struggle with a few aspects of the book, it didn’t take away from the other delightful aspects of this enchanting romance. I’m so glad I didn’t pass up the opportunity to read this sweet love story. Happy reading!

Melissa Foster Author Interview

1) ”If a woman can’t find love in the quaint town of Harmony Pointe, it’s sure to find them…” —this is the tagline for your newest series Harmony Pointe. Tell us a bit about the town and these women who are finding love.

I love writing about close-knit small towns, where gossip is ripe, and embarrassing tales of youthful rascals abound. Harmony Pointe is nestled between Sweetwater and Port Hudson, New York, not far from the city. It offers grand views of mountains as far as the eye could see. Cobblestone streets, brick-front eclectic shops, and old-fashioned street lights add to the small town’s charm. Readers who are familiar with my Sugar Lake series will recognize Harmony Pointe as Derek Grant’s hometown.

2) What was the idea that sparked the beginning of the series?

I have been itching to write Ben Dalton and Aurelia Stark’s story since I first read about them in WILD BOYS AFTER DARK: LOGAN and BAD BOYS AFTER DARK: MICK (Billionaires After Dark series) and THE REAL THING (Sugar Lake series). Harmony Pointe is a Sugar Lake spin-off, and in the Sugar Lake series several of Ben’s siblings find love. It was finally Ben’s turn.

3) For longtime fans, can you tell us what this series has in common with your previous books? How is the series different from what you have written before?

Avid readers of my Love in Bloom series will have met Ben and Aurelia in several previous books and series. Their story is filled with humor and sexy times, and this one wallops the reader with an ugly-cry worthy punch. This family is very female centric, which is different than most of my other series. The exception is the Montgomerys, cousins to the Daltons, in which the males are also outnumbered. #GirlPower (Bradens & Mongtomerys series).

4) Why was it important that Ben and Aurelia launched this series in Call Her Mine?

Ben and Aurelia were too loud for me to ignore! They were finally ready to share.

5) There are friends-to-lovers romances and then there is Ben and Aurelia who are closer-than-close. Seriously, these two just about live in each other’s heads. What takes them so long to realize that they belong together?

Have you ever had a friend who you love so much that you can’t imagine life without them? I have. It instills a certain level of fear—what if you risk that friendship, lay your feelings on the line, and the other person doesn’t feel the same? True friends, the ones who “get” you, who accept you at your worst, bitchiest states, and at your best, are hard to come by. Risking the friendship is terrifying. I think this was the case for Ben and Aurelia—Plus there’s Ben and his damn planning...
That man made me crazy.
I love him so hard!

6) When romance finally (finally!) is in the cards for these two, they have one very tiny situation that turns up—Ben’s previously unknown infant daughter. What was it like to create an insta-family for this pair?

It was so frigging fun I wish I could do it again! I loved every second of writing this book. I was able to strip Ben and Aurelia down to their most raw selves and emotions, and then watch as they found their new footings together. It was glorious.

7) While it is unfair to ask if you have a favorite hero, we’d love to know what makes Ben so special to you.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes—arrogant, funny, introverted, brilliant, average, overly serious, etc. Ben is like the guy you see sitting at the end of a bar in a fine suit and think he’s probably taken, or at the least too refined to be fun. And then he opens his mouth and melts you, or makes you laugh, at every turn. He’s protective, but not in a bullying way. Don’t even get me started with that man holding a tiny baby, falling in love with her page after page. I’ve got goosebumps just thinking about it.

Call Her Mine Excerpt

“I’ve got to go.” She tried to pull away, but he dug his fingers into her knotted muscles, releasing tension and drawing a moan from her traitorous lungs.

“Don’t run off,” he coaxed. “I wasn’t kidding. You are my best friend. I trust you with my secrets, and I love who you are.”

Hope bubbled up inside her, and she closed her eyes, glad he couldn’t see her face. Had their time finally come? “Really?”

“Of course,” he said, and she heard the smile in his voice.

That made her feel all sorts of good, and the truth came easily. “I love who you are, too.”

He leaned his chin on her shoulder, his hard chest pressing against her back as he said, “I especially love who you are when you’re making me breakfast.”

“Ugh!” She pushed to her feet, but he snagged her wrist, giving her the puppy-dog eyes she’d never been able to resist. The ones that said, Please don’t leave me. “Ben,” she warned.

“Relsy,” he pleaded.

“I am not making you breakfast. I have to go.” She yanked her hand away and said, “And I’m busy for the next few weeks. Actually, for a lifetime, so . . .” She shoved her feet into her red Converse sneakers and grabbed her purse.

“I seriously have to make my own breakfast?” Ben pushed to his feet and stretched, six-plus feet of hotness towering over her five-two frame. “But you make waffles better than I do.”

“I do a lot of things better than you. Don’t forget to call Aiden back.” Aiden was his business partner. He’d called Ben last night while they were watching a movie and Ben had made her laugh, causing tequila to come out of her nose, which had sent him into hysterics and rendered him unable to answer the call.

“That’s right.” He grabbed his phone from the table. “He was supposed to set up a meeting with our legal team.”

“For the hotel chain you’re buying?”

“Yeah. Hey, take my sweatshirt. It’s early. You’ll be cold.”

He pulled his sweatshirt over his head and tossed it to her, revealing a dusting of chest hair over muscular pecs and a treasure trail that disappeared beneath the waist of his low-slung jeans. His sweatshirt hit her in the chest and landed at her feet, reminding her she was staring.

Ben laughed. “Nice catch, Rels. Remind me not to pick you for my baseball team.”

“I don’t want to be on your team. You run the bases too slow,” she mumbled as she picked up his sweatshirt and tugged it over her head, inhaling his masculine scent. “I’m out of here.”

“How about cereal?” he asked with a wink. “I’ll make it.”

“Since when did you become so needy?”

A coy grin slid across his face. “I know that once you’re in my kitchen, there’s no holding back. You won’t let me eat crap when you can make something delicious.”

“Yeah, you should see me in the bedroom.” She felt her eyes bug out. She slammed her mouth closed, unable to believe what she’d said. She stormed through the hallway and out the door, followed by Ben’s laughter—and almost tripped over a basket. She leaned back, holding the door open, and hollered, “I think Willow left you muffins. There’s a basket on your porch.”

“Way to go, Willow,” he said as he strode down the hall. “Let’s see the goods.”

She realized she was staring at his bare chest again and snapped, “I’m taking the biggest muffin,” as if it was his fault he had great pecs and abs she wanted to lick, and bite, and—

Down, girl.

He cocked a grin and said, “Take as many as you’d like, but you’ll pay for them later.”

In my dreams.

Vikki’s Musings

This is the third book in the Holiday, Texas series. I read the first two books and loved them, so when I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, I eagerly agreed to read and review. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.

Cowboy Charming is a delightful, light-hearted romance with endearing characters and a laugh-out-loud plot. From the pot belly pigs, to the eccentric citizens of Holiday, this book will have you giggling and laughing. The pacing is excellent, so I became engaged from the first page until the last.

Dixie King’s character is a bit uptight since her father is a preacher and made sure she stayed on the right path. Fortunately, her grandmother builds her up so that balances the negativity she receives from her father. Dixie does have a fiery side to her and isn’t afraid to fight for her beliefs. I really enjoyed her character a great deal.

Presley Walker is a fantastic hero. I enjoyed his fun-loving personality. He’s known as the cowboy Casanova, but he’s now ready to settle down with the right girl. He’s known Dixie most of her life, but never spent much time with her until his sister asks him to help run things while she’s out of town. I loved how he dives right in and is willing to do whatever is needed for the chili festival. He’s blown away by Dixie and wants her more than he’s ever wanted any other woman.

Although Presley and Dixie start out at odds with each other, the chemistry between cannot be denied. The sparks that fly are amazing. The banter between them is lively and fun. I really wanted this cowboy to win his girl!

If you enjoy light-hearted romances with a great cast of characters and a humorous plot, then you will love Cowboy Charming as much as I did. I have thoroughly enjoyed the books set in Holiday, Texas and hope to read many more. Happy reading!

From New York Times bestselling author Katy Evans comes a hot romance about two strangers and their race to fall in love.

The game is on the instant Luke spots Penelope “Nell” Carpenter. He’s out for the money, yes, but getting a little dirty with Nell doesn’t sound too bad either. Everyone knows he’s not the marrying kind, so it’s a good thing it’s just for show. God knows he’s the worst guy his pretty wife should pick for real.

Vikki’s Musings

Million Dollar Marriage is a light-hearted, humorous romance by Katy Evans. When I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, the book description intrigued me, so I agreed to read and review. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.

This is the first book I’ve read by Katy Evans, but it will not be the last. In fact, I just downloaded the first book, Million Dollar Devil, in the series. The banter between Penelope and Luke is delightful and pulled me in from the beginning then kept me enmeshed until the end. The pacing is great, keeping the plot moving forward.

Penelope “Nell” Carpenter’s character is endearing. I loved her quirky personality. She has so much debt from getting her degrees, she’s so desperate, she enters a contest. The best thing she ever did was become a contestant on the game show. She’s paired up with a guy totally opposite of anyone she’s ever met before. Nell’s so reserved, she needs a mate who will bring her out of her shell and let her shine.

Luke Cross is a yummy hero. While his exterior is rough and rugged, underneath, he’s a marshmallow. I adored his character. He’s so sweet with Nell and accepting of her insecurities. He encourages her to be strong and brings out her competitive side she never knew she possessed. He’s the perfect mate for her. I love that he doesn’t allow his head to be turned by a chance at stardom.

The chemistry between Nell and Luke is amazing. The sexual tension is excellent because Luke wants his relationship with her to be different from any other he’s had with the women from his past. That makes him a true hero for me. He not only falls in love with Nell, he respects her. He also has a very forgiving nature. For me that is as sexy as it can be!

If you enjoy romantic comedies with plenty of heart, and one with engaging characters, then you will love Million Dollar Marriage as much as I did. I can’t wait to read the first book in this series. Happy reading!
