Construction tip #1: Never anger a hot-tempered woman who knows how to wield a sledgehammer. And right now, Jill Sadler is spitting mad. The opposition: We Nail It Contractors, helmed by the man who once married her…and walked out twenty-four hours later. Jill can’t let Cal Reynolds take this round. Not when she has her foster sisters and years of righteous resentment spurring her on.
Winning the contest would do wonders for Cal’s firm. Getting under Jill’s skin is just a bonus. She paints him as a villain, though Cal had no choice but to leave. Vikki’s Musings

I always know I’m in for a treat with a new release from Kim Law. When I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, I eagerly agreed to read and review the first book in her new series, Deep in the Heart.

As with all Ms. Law’s books, the characters are real and flawed, the plot is intriguing and there’s plenty of emotions running high. Although it took me time to become enmeshed in the story, once I did I was fully engaged.

Jill’s character is a bit of a mixed bag for me. There were many things I loved about, but a few that didn’t work for me. She carried bull-headed to a whole new level. However, her loyalty to her foster sister and foster mom in admirable.

I felt the same way about Cal, maybe even more so. He is just as bull-headed as Jill, but he allows fear of love to rule his decisions, which keeps him doing the same thing over and over again.

Let’s talk about the romance. While there is definitely plenty of chemistry between Jill and Cal, they don’t even kiss until well over the half-way point of the book. I began to think this one was not going to have any heated scenes. Alas, Ms. Law came through, just a little later than I’m used to with her books. I’m not saying the sexual tension is absent, it just could have been stronger. A few heated kisses sprinkled in would have helped a lot.

Nonetheless, I really love the premise for this series and look forward to reading her foster sisters’ stories. While this is not my favorite book by Ms. Law, it’s a good story and well worth reading. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

It’s been some time since I have read a book by this author. This is book 6 of the Cinderella Sisterhood series. This is easily a standalone story. Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for an advance copy of The Scandalous Flirt.

While the pacing is good, I struggled with it. The plot is a bit weak and heavy on mystery and weak on romance. For most of the book, they detest each other and only tolerate being together because they are trying to solve the mystery of who is blackmailing Aurora’s silly step-mother.

Aurora’s character did not come across as a flirt at all to me. I guess the title reflected the scandal she was involved in during her first season. While Aurora doesn’t like her step-mother, she loves her half-sister and doesn’t want her touched by scandalous as it had her in her first season. That is an admirable goal, but other than that, I did not care for her character very much.

Lucas is not a hero I could love or even like. He is rude to Aurora, and it makes no sense that he was in love with her eight years before. If that was the case, why did he forget about her? I found his character very disappointing. All through the book, he is pursuing an heiress so he can save his estate from ruin, not an admirable aspect of his character.

The romance is practically non-existent. At 60% into the book, I was still waiting for the first kiss! At that point, I expected this to follow along with the pattern of older, traditional regencies with the kiss being the climax to the love story. Imagine my surprise when they end up in bed toward the end of the book. For me, there was no chemistry between this duo.

Now, the mystery aspect of the story. While did keep the pacing going, it was a bit predictable to me. There were a few surprises along the way, but not enough to support the book.

The most enjoyable part of this tale is the friendship between Rory’s aunt and Lucas’s mother. They added a delightful touch to this story. The banter between these two ladies is enchanting and lively.

Nonetheless, The Scandalous Flirt is well-written, so I was able to give it 3.5 stars. If you’re looking for a mystery with a splash of romance, then this book may appeal to you more than it did for me. Happy reading!

Mr. Wright
Heroes of Henderson, Book 6
Publisher: Kelly Girl Productions
Release Date: October 24, 2017

After Dallas, Laidey Bartholomew finds Henderson to be a breath of fresh air. Out from under the expectations of her socialite family, she can be as invisible as she chooses. She’s perfectly happy flying under the radar, until a hot-tempered, masculine work of art roars into town on his Road King and zeroes in on her.

All of a sudden, Laidey’s not invisible anymore.

Xavier Wright hasn’t lived in Henderson for fourteen years. You’d think by now everyone would have forgotten about his juvenile antics. Knowing his sick ma doesn’t need any additional stress in her life, he’s determined to make amends for his bad-boy ways. Unfortunately, a certain little newcomer continually brings out the worst in him.

She’s way too prissy for him. He’s way too domineering for her.

Harry believes it’s a match made in heaven.

All the books in the Heroes of Henderson Series are complete romances. They do not need to be read in order, but it might be more fun that way as characters continue to show up in Henderson in big ways and small.

Excerpt

The sighs from my supposed-to-be-empty bedroom grow into moans, and my pulse thuds in my temples. I know the dark place might suck me in if I’m not careful, but I can’t stop myself from looking.
I peer through the half-open door. My husband crouches naked on the bed with his face buried between long, shapely legs. Gorgeous, oddly-familiar legs.
“Oooh, oooh,” groans the owner of the silky limbs.
“Mmm, mmmmm,” answers Jerome. His rear wags from side to side. The two bald spots in the center of his butt cheeks stare at me, and my skin tingles the way it did when I drew too close to the sparklers little Benjamin played with on the fourth of July.
The bed creaks. After twenty-six years the thing still makes the same noise. A chill winds its way up my back, and pain sears beneath my ribcage. My breaths rush in and out.
How can he? What the hell? In our bed. Today of all days.
Darkness grows, and flames erupt behind my eyelids. In a red fury, I howl and charge. I whoop again and bear down on the startled couple.
With a jolt, the name of the owner of the legs explodes into my mind.
Mandy.
I know Mandy. Sort of.
Jerome’s personal trainer. Mandy Malone.
I slip on the area rug and lose my balance. Oh, yes. I know Mandy. At the gym Christmas party Mandy’s hips sported a short, pink thing that appeared to be more like a headband than a skirt. The Christmas party was where I saw those legs before.
Mandy jumps out of bed and pulls the covers around her. She cowers in the corner.
I’m not proud of what I do next.
I grab a red high heel from the floor and climb to my feet. Taking aim, I hurl the shoe, but Jerome rolls away and the stiletto lands on the pillow. I reach for one of Jerome’s wing tips resting annoyingly on the floor beside a pair of red panties and matching bustier.  I launch the shoe, and the ever-athletic creep dodges and leaps from the bed. A pink rubber phallus lands with a thunk, and a yowl bursts from deep within me. “Sex toys. You’re using sex toys.” My hands grasp the floor lamp and level it like a spear.
“Sof, cut it out.” Jerome’s voice quavers, and he holds his hands over his privates.
Yanking the plug from the wall, I swing the lamp in a circle with no idea of what I’m doing, acting on instinct. I run towards him, but Jerome darts out of the way. The lamp smashes into the headboard, shattering bulbs and sending the pole flying from my hands. Shards of glass cover the bed and floor.
A tiny red mini-skirt and pink tank top catch my attention. My God, she must shop in the children’s department. And what an awful color combination.
“Sof, this isn’t doing anyone any good. Can we talk?” He’s bobbing and weaving now, waiting for the next assault.
“Talk? Talk? What’s there to talk about?” My brain sizzles, and my thoughts stab mercilessly. I seize his belt from the floor and hurl it, grazing the top of his head. “Do you remember when we bought this bed?”
No answer leaves his lips.
“I do.” I snatch up his other wingtip, and this one catches him in the back. “We couldn’t afford it, but you wouldn’t take no for an answer. You said it would last a lifetime.” I rip at the all-cotton sheets, yanking them off the mattress. “I just bought these at Macy’s. I changed the bed yesterday. You told me polyester blends make you sweat. So does she!” I yell, jerking my arm towards the cowering blonde and fighting the fury twisting inside my gut.
Jerome approaches the closet. His hairy bare rear with its Orphan Annie blank orbs shines in the morning light. I tug on the curtains, and as the metal rod falls we both reach for it. He twists hard, and I let go causing him to lose his balance and send the pole clattering against the oak flooring. I swoop up the rod in a death grip and connect with the back of his knees. He falls to the rug and writhes in agony.
“Stop,” he shouts.
“Sure,” I say, launching myself on top of him and boxing his ears. “How’s this?”
He rolls to the side throwing me off, and my face plants onto the carpet. I scramble to my feet and collect the scattered clothing, stumbling down the hallway to the spare bedroom.

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the opportunity to read The Bride Who Got Lucky by Janna MacGregor. It’s been quite some time since I’ve read a novel by Ms. MacGregor, and now I remember why I used to read all of her books. I must read the first book in this series.

The Bride Who Got Lucky is an emotionally-charged romance. The love story is enthralling and drew me in from the start. In fact, I read this in an evening, so the pacing is excellent. The writing is smooth and flowing, the characters are well developed, and the plot is good. My one issue with this book is that the heroine’s actions are a bit too forward thinking. A regency woman would not have been. Nonetheless, her actions did make this an intriguing read. The premise does deal with circumstances faced by women of this age where “the rule of thumb” applied.

Emma’s character is interesting. Her motives are genuine and compassionate. Her determination for justice is honorable. As I mentioned, while some of her actions were too modern, they are an integral aspect of the story and made it a great book.

Nick is the kind of hero I love. He’s damaged, edgy, tormented and determined to keep his heart firmly under lock and key. He’s a man of principle and almost allows it to destroy the one he loves the most. I loved his desire to protect Emma regardless of his great need to protect his heart.

The tender romance between this couple was truly lovely, and I really wanted them to find their happy ending. The chemistry between them grabbed me and kept me vested from the start. While I love great love scenes, there were aspects of the ones in this book that were not to my tastes, others may disagree, but the scenes were certainly well written.

If you enjoy a regency with plenty of deep emotion and a book that deals with real life situations women faced in that period of history, then you will love The Bride Who Got Lucky. It has an absolutely fantastic ending. Happy reading!

He was a nameless guy in a bar--a man Grace couldn't get out of her head...

A week later, she came home to find him sweaty and shirtless with a tape measure in hand, remodeling her loft. As a Parker-King, she's not allowed to want someone like Noah Dalton. She's sick of her life, though. Sick of the rules of being a Parker-King. She wants something more, even if it isn't forever. Somewhere in history there was that one time where hot, no-strings-attached sex didn't end badly, right? Finding comfort in the arms of a former SEAL is easy, not falling for one . . . not so much.

Noah left the military and moved to New York for one reason: his daughter. Not for some uptight businesswoman--a Manhattan elitist. So when Grace offers him the kind of relationship that no hot-blooded man can turn down, he should say no. And when her seemingly put-together life spins out of control, and his instincts to protect and save kick in, he should turn away. But he doesn't.

Can two people from different worlds really live in the moment, knowing they're on borrowed time, or is someone bound to get hurt?

Excerpt

A splash of light shines beneath the door at the end of the hall. I swear I didn’t leave anything on this morning.
I touch the knob, a slight tremble moving down my arm and to my hand as I think back to the hotel in Greece.
My stomach tightens and burns, and my pulse skates to a faster speed. I slowly twist the handle, but my mind is protesting, begging me to run. My body is stiff and my muscles taut.
Run!
I should’ve run that night in Athens. Why’d I open that door? Why am I opening this one?
I inhale a deep breath, holding it—and it’s like the air in the room cocoons me and I can’t exhale.
I’m expecting the worst. Athens, part two. Another incident.
But once the door is wide-open, I see a man crouched over a wooden beam on the floor, a tape measurer in hand. The guy’s shirtless. His tanned, muscled back has a slight sheen of sweat down his spine.
He’s got to be part of the new remodel team I hired last weekend.
I bring a hand to my chest and try to calm down. To get my mind off Greece and back in New York.
“Who the hell are you?”
He’s a carpenter, right? I just want confirmation.
My hand goes inside my purse, and I search for my phone just in case I need to call the cops.
The man releases his tape measure and it retracts and snaps, falling with a thud to the floor. He slowly lifts his hands as if he can actually see me and I have a gun on him.
He rises to his feet. “Sorry. I work for Bella. She gave me the key.” He turns toward me.
My lungs deflate as if they’ve been poked with a needle, and I’m losing oxygen fast. It’s not because of Athens.
It’s because it’s…him.
Military Guy. Unless I’m wrong about him being military.
I’m never wrong.
“You.” His brows pull together and his hands fall to his sides.
I remove my hand from my purse and drop the bag to the floor. I’m more comfortable now that I know the shirtless guy isn’t some psychopath but in fact a construction worker.
But it’s the hot guy from the bar, which is still pretty damn bad.
“You’re Grace? I wasn’t expecting—”
“And what were you expecting?” I fold my arms and remain standing just inside the living area. He’s near the wall of windows overlooking the city on the other side of the room.
“I guess I pictured Grace as someone twice your age with a lot of cats.” A sheepish grin sweeps across his face.
I open my palms and glance to the left then right. “Do you see any cats?”
His smile deepens.
“And does my name sound old?” Maybe it does. The hyphen doesn’t help.
“Well, I don’t think that anymore. Now looking at you—Grace fits.”
I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean, and I don’t bother to ask. I blink and try to figure out what the hell is going on.
“Are you stalking me?” I ask instead, though I know this must be crazy stupid luck that he’s now remodeling my loft. Of the millions of people in the city…
