Run Dog Run is a fast-paced novel with compelling characters and a suspenseful plot. Ms. Kaska hold her secrets tightly, keeping me guessing and wondering who the villain is of this tale. The pacing pulled me into the story from the start and held me captivated until the end. 

 

The primary protagonist is Kate Caraway. She’s recently returned to Texas after spending five years in Africa with her husband, Jack Ryder. She quickly becomes involved when her niece asked for her help in fighting for animal rights. A nearby rancher and senatorial candidate may be abusing his racing greyhounds.  Kate is fierce when it comes to fighting for defenseless animals. I admire her determination to find the truth.

 

The mystery is enthralling. Ms. Kaska threw me off the track several times, just when I thought I knew who was behind the murder and mayhem. She builds the tension and suspense to a crescendo until the villain is revealed. The dark moment is truly dark indeed!

 

If you enjoy a mystery with intriguing characters and an action-packed tale, then you will love Run Dog Run as much as I did. I look forward to reading the next book in this amazing series. Happy reading!

Kathleen Kaska is the author of The Sherlock Holmes Quiz Book, which has been updated and reissued by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group and released on November 1, 2020. She is the founder of The Dogs in the Nighttime, the Sherlock Holmes Society of Anacortes, Washington, a scion of The Baker Street Irregulars.

Kathleen is also the author of two awarding-winning mystery series: the Sydney Lockhart Mystery Series set in the 1950s and the Classic Triviography Mystery Series. Her first two Lockhart mysteries, Murder at the Arlington and Murder at the Luther, were selected as bonus-books for the Pulpwood Queen Book Group, the country's largest book group. The Magnolia Palace is set-in two-time periods, 1919 and 1966 at the Frick Mansion in New York City. It follows several women, and several characters are based on individuals who were park of the Frick family. The pacing is decent, but it speeds up dramatically in the last half of the book. Ms. Davis has clearly done a great deal of research of the time-period and of the Frick family, making the novel an excellent read.

 

In 1919, Lillian Carter, AKA Angelica. She is the primary character, along with Helen Frick. She stubbles into the role of secretary for this woman and Lillian becomes a pawn between Helen and her father, Henry Clay Frick. Lillian’s tale is a sad one and I had empathy for her.

 

In 1966, a young model is at a photo shoot in the Frick mansion and accidentally gets locked in, along with Joshua Lawrence, an intern for the Frick mansion. I enjoyed the scavenger hunt the two undertake and liked both characters. While there is definitely an attraction between these two, the story is centered on the mystery of the scavenger hunt.

 

Ms. Davis handles the transition from one time-period to the other seamlessly without confusing the reader. Her descriptive writing adds a great deal to the overall enjoyment. She also manages to tie up the significant sub-plots. I would have enjoyed finding out more about Lillian’s escape from the Frick mansion and how the organist helped her.

 

If you enjoy historical fiction filled with individuals who lived in the era it covers, along with a fascinating mystery to solve, then you will love The Magnolia Palace as much as I did. I’m so glad I agreed to read this excellent novel. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Davis and look forward to reading others by her. Happy reading!

Secrets Mothers Keep is a well written novel with several moments that had my heart racing as I grabbed my Kindle tight waiting to read what would happen next. The pacing kept me enthralled from the first page to the last. 

 

Cora Mitchell is the main character and the single mother of a teen aged boy she realizes is keeping secrets. Her son seemed to accept his father’s death without any lingering effects, but when a boy in their community is found near death, she finds reasons to question her previous assumptions.

 

The mystery is well developed and kept me involved as the story unfolded. It had me asking a great many questions over who could be behind the attack on Daniel. The young man is a LGBTQ activist, so the community sees this heinous attack as a hate crime. 

 

As more is revealed, it became clear Ezra must be involved in some way. While I believe a parent needs to respect their children’s need for privacy, when faced with something that could endanger one’s child, sometimes a parent must snoop. In Ezra’s case, I believe Cora had justification. 

 

What she soon discovers, her son has been on the dark web and learns he is missing his church community. Since her husband’s death, Cora stopped attending services and is questioning why God allowed her husband to fall to his death.

 

This novel deals with immense grief and destruction of Cora’s belief system. It also addresses broken friendships. I found the complexity of Cora’s mind fascinating, so that too kept me reading, and I found this a difficult book to put down!

 

If you enjoy novels that with more substance and one with complex characters, then you will enjoy Secrets Mothers Keep as much as I did. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Moya, but it will not be the last. Happy reading!

The Turncoat’s Widow is a well-written novel with plenty of suspense, intriguing characters and an enthralling plot. The pacing is a bit slow in the first part of this tale, but it picks up dramatically around the halfway mark. From that point on, I couldn’t read fast enough.

 

Rebecca Parcell is the heroine, and I enjoyed her character a great deal. She’s fearless and determined to save her farm and protect her mother-in-law. Her bravery as the story progresses is amazing. The care and concern she shows toward Augusta is touching and helped me become fully vested in her character. Although her struggles are daunting, she never gives up, even when she faces being branded as a traitor.

 

Daniel Alloway is the hero, and he grew on me as the story moves forward. I could feel his fear when he’s presented with the task George Washington and Alexander Hamilton persuade him to undertake. The last thing he wants is to end up on the British prison ship, the Jersey again. His nightmares he experiences concerning his escape are chilling and vivid. There’s a good amount of descriptive writing in this book of those scenes that had me grabbing onto my seat!

 

I loved the spine-chilling espionage in this tale, as Rebecca and Daniel run from the villains of this story. I also enjoyed the historical aspect of the novel. I love novels set during our country’s fight for independence, and Ms. Becker’s research comes through. I can just imagine the excitement she must have experienced when the premise for this book came to her while volunteering at the Morristown Historical Park.

 

If you enjoy historical fiction with nail-biting suspense, incredible characters and a fantastic mystery to solve, then you will love The Turncoat’s Widow as much as I did. I was amazed when I learned this is Ms. Becker’s debut novel. This book is well worth the time it took to read. Happy reading!

The Survivors is a mystery thriller set in a small coastal town where everyone knows everything. The novel goes from the present to twelve years in the past which made it difficult at times to follow along. The pacing is excruciatingly slow, and I considered not finishing it on more than one occasion, but I refused to give up.

 

Kieran Elliott is the main character. He and his girlfriend have come back to Evelyn Bay to help his parents move since his father has dementia. This brings on lots of painful memories for him, and there are hard feelings toward him by some of the townspeople who blame him for the deaths of two of their own.

 

Stephen Shanahan is the narrator, and while he has a smooth tone, the pitch is very deep, making it difficult to understand him. I normally listen at 1.5 to 2 speed, and I had to slow it down a lot. He did give the various characters a different tone, so it was easy to know who was talking.

 

Ultimately, I struggled with the story and couldn’t become vested in any of the characters, and although I enjoyed the ending for the most part, it ended quite abruptly. The mystery is intriguing, but it wasn’t strong enough to keep me engaged, but I am in the minority. Many other readers loved The Survivors. Happy reading!

Up the Creek is an exciting mystery with complex characters and a gripping plot. The pacing pulled me in from the first page and kept me enthralled until the last. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery and trying to discover how it was all connected.

 

Caitlin Walker is the main character in this book, and she is married to Lance. She was plagued by horrific nightmares as a child, and when in college, found a way to silence them. Now her young son is having similar gruesome nightmares. I enjoyed her character a lot and loved her determination to protect her young son. 

 

Lance has several unexplained idiosyncrasies, such as insisting they keep the bedroom locked while they sleep. He never has explained why he needs this to Caitlin. He makes light of their son’s nightmares, but he is actually deeply concerned and takes Adam to a woman who is supposed to be able to end his nightmares. His secrets are eating him alive, but fear keeps him silent. I felt so sorry for his troubled soul as the story plays out and shed a few tears for him, especially at the end.

 

This is a true thriller that kept me reading as fast as possible, so I could find out how or if they could overcome their issues. This book is far from the light-hearted books I normally read, and I loved it. 

 

If you enjoy thrillers with complex relationships, and a plot that pulls you into the story, then you will love Up the Creek as much as I did. Upon finishing the novel I rated it with 4 Gold Crowns, but as I wrote this review, I decided to give it 4.5 Gold Crowns instead and will round it up to Five stars on the sites where I place my review.
