I am so glad I found A Lady Never Swears by Christina Wordham. The novel has with engaging characters and fascinating plot. The pacing pulled me in and kept my attention until the end. I found this book refreshing as it’s a traditional Regency romance, and I loved returning to the glittering world of Regency England.

 

Peyton walker is our heroine, and she’s feisty, smart and determined. I liked her and wanted her to succeed. Talk about an underdog, Peyton did not have an easy childhood, and she deserves to find happiness.

 

Aaron Reynolds is the hero of this tale, and he’s carrying a lot of guilt because he has inherited his father’s title when it should have been his elder brother. Fate had other plans for Aaron. He has one final mission before he resigns his commission.

 

The romance between Aaron and Peyton has plenty of the sexual tension I adore in Regency romance. It’s a slow burn that bursts into a volcanic fire. This couple is perfect for each other, and I wanted them to find their way to each other.

 

If you enjoy a lovely Regency romance with characters you can fall in love with, and a plot that has a good bit of suspense, then you will love A Lady Never Swears as much as I did. I look forward to reading the next book in this series when it’s released. Happy reading!

The Girl from Venice is a well written novel set during WWII and Germany’s occupation of Venice and in current times in 2010. The pacing pulled me in from the first page and kept me enthralled to the last. I enjoyed reading about this period of Italy’s history, and it’s clear Ms. Daiko did a tremendous amount of research.

 

Lidia De Angelis is the central character, and I enjoyed the steel in her backbone that helps her survive against all odds. Her determination to fight with the resistance is admirable, and her softer side comes through when she saves two young boys. What she suffered at the hands of the brown shirts is horrific, but she does not let it destroy her.

 

Charlotte is another primary character. She is Lidia’s granddaughter and is fascinated when she finds a Jewish prayer book and unopened letters, along with a photo of her grandmother and her friends, while going through Lidia’s belongings after her death. She’s as fiercely determined as her grandmother and sets out on a journey of discovery when she travels to Venice to learn why Lidia never talked of her experiences during WWII and her life in Venice.

 

While this is not a romance, it does have two emotional love stories interwoven through the plot, and I enjoyed both. Ms. Daiko’s writing is vivid and detailed. I could feel Lidia’s pain and anguish throughout her part of the story. I also enjoyed Charlotte’s character growth.

 

It you enjoy historical fiction set during WWII and like learning of another part of the devastation caused by Natzi Germany and Mussolini’s Fascist regime, then you will love The Girl from Venice as much as I did. I highly recommend this amazing novel. Happy reading!

The Turncoat’s Widow is a well-written novel with plenty of suspense, intriguing characters and an enthralling plot. The pacing is a bit slow in the first part of this tale, but it picks up dramatically around the halfway mark. From that point on, I couldn’t read fast enough.

 

Rebecca Parcell is the heroine, and I enjoyed her character a great deal. She’s fearless and determined to save her farm and protect her mother-in-law. Her bravery as the story progresses is amazing. The care and concern she shows toward Augusta is touching and helped me become fully vested in her character. Although her struggles are daunting, she never gives up, even when she faces being branded as a traitor.

 

Daniel Alloway is the hero, and he grew on me as the story moves forward. I could feel his fear when he’s presented with the task George Washington and Alexander Hamilton persuade him to undertake. The last thing he wants is to end up on the British prison ship, the Jersey again. His nightmares he experiences concerning his escape are chilling and vivid. There’s a good amount of descriptive writing in this book of those scenes that had me grabbing onto my seat!

 

I loved the spine-chilling espionage in this tale, as Rebecca and Daniel run from the villains of this story. I also enjoyed the historical aspect of the novel. I love novels set during our country’s fight for independence, and Ms. Becker’s research comes through. I can just imagine the excitement she must have experienced when the premise for this book came to her while volunteering at the Morristown Historical Park.

 

If you enjoy historical fiction with nail-biting suspense, incredible characters and a fantastic mystery to solve, then you will love The Turncoat’s Widow as much as I did. I was amazed when I learned this is Ms. Becker’s debut novel. This book is well worth the time it took to read. Happy reading!

In the opening scene of Ground Sweet as Sugar, a seventeen-year-old girl is living through the night before her death as a traitor. Circumstances gives her the chance to escape her punishment, and she becomes a bond servant to a West Indies planter. The action in this novel kept me engaged throughout the story, and I enjoyed that aspect of this adventurous tale. 

 

There were times I was pulled from the story because the author refers to the characters as the planter, the bond servant, the pirate, and that separated me from them. Once a reader knows who’s POV that is narrating, it would be less intrusive for the author to use a pronoun instead. This kept their POVs from becoming as deep as I prefer, so this influenced my rating. 

 

Charlotte Dillon is the heroine of this tale, and she certainly manages to get into a lot of trouble. Her journey is quite a rollercoaster ride, but she’s gutsy and determined, making her an interesting heroine. While I didn’t like some of Charlotte’s decisions, I did enjoy her character. She has several relationships with other male characters, and since this book ends on a cliff hanger, I’m not sure where those relationships are going.

 

I found the Irish rebellion history in this novel fascination, and Ms. Heywood has certainly done her research. This is an intricate part of the plot, so that that’s an important aspect. I also enjoyed the descriptive writing. At times, I became part of the scenes, which is always a benefit.

 

If you enjoy historical novels with plenty of suspense and adventure, then Ground Sweet as Sugar will be an exciting reading experience for you. While there’s much to enjoy in this tale, I don’t plan to read the sequel. Happy reading!

The Princess and the Rogue is a well-written Regency novel with engaging characters and a action-packed plot. From the first exciting scene, the pacing pulled me in and held my attention until the end. 

 

Anya, AKA Anne Brown’s character has several facets with personality traits I most enjoy in a romance. Her determination to survive under extremely difficult conditions impressed me. Her loyalty to her friend is also impressive. I ached for her pain of losing her family, and her fear she would be pushed into marriage.

 

Sebastian Wolff is a great hero with the characteristic I most love. He’s dashing, gorgeous and brave. His need to protect the heroine touched my heart. His loss of his hearing during the Battle of Waterloo adds a deeper level to his personality.

 

The romance between Anya and Seb bursts to life from the first meeting, even though neither wants of them desires it. They both fight it, but the overwhelming passion cannot be denied. I wanted them to find their happy ending.

 

If you enjoy Regency romance set in the glittering ballrooms of London, and with characters that will intrigue, then you will love The Princess and the Rogue as much as I did. Although this novel is part of a series, I had no problems reading it without having read the first two. Happy reading!

London Restoration is an outstanding look at the start of the Cold War after WWII ends, and England’s effort to combat it. The characters hold secrets from their time during the war and both are afraid to tell the other. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical aspects of this amazing novel. I love old churches and the history behind them and have visited several mentioned in this book.

Diana Somerville’s character has many facets, one that prove fascinating. Since I too enjoy visiting historical places, I identified with her chosen path. I also became vested in her frustration over not being allowed to share why she wasn’t at her husband’s side when he received his injuries at the end of the war. 

Brent Somerville is an intriguing character. I liked him a great deal and could understand his fear of sharing what happened to him at the end of the war. I also admired his patience with Diana when she’s doesn’t tell him why she didn’t rush to him while he laid in a hospital suffering from severe injuries.

The love story between the couple is built on a firm foundation, and even though they must deal with what happened during the war, both are determined to find the way back to each other.

I listened to the audio book of London Restoration and thoroughly became enmeshed once the story started. At first I wasn’t sure because it read like a documentary. Hannah Curtis is the narrator, and her lovely voice pulled me into the tale and kept me listening until the end. She brought the characters to life, and I could easily know which charter was speaking. There is richness and layers to her tone, and she read with just the right amount of emotion.

If you like historical fiction with strong romantic elements, and a narrator who adds to your listening enjoyment, then you want to grab your copy of this excellent novel. Whether you chose to read or listen to London Restoration, you are in for a treat. Happy reading and listening!

2020 also finds my first foray into non-fiction with Dream, Plan, Go: a travel guide/ memoir that inspires you to adventure near and far (May, 2020).

I am also delighted to be writing historical romance set amidst the beautiful architecture of London and Vienna in the post-war years. The London Restoration releases in Fall 2020 and introduces readers to the gorgeous Christopher Wren churches blitzed during the War as well as the enigmatic codes of Bletchley Park.

I live in Toronto, my favourite film is Master and Commander, I am obsessed with Hallmark Christmas movies, Broadway musicals and Starbucks.
