Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the electronic copy of Shining Knight by Elizabeth Johns. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this delightful Regency romance prior to publication. My opinions are my own and nothing has influenced my rating.

Shining Knight is an enchanting traditional Regency romance with endearing characters and an emotionally charged plot. The pacing pulled me in from the first page and kept me engaged until the last.

Lady Eugenia Knight is the heroine, and an intriguing one to say the least. She’s not the typical Regency lady since she grew up spending most of her time with her brothers. At times, she’s a bit awkward and doesn’t enjoy London society, getting into mischief on more than one occasion. She prefers spending her time in the country much more than town. What I enjoyed most about her character is her unique and quirky personality.

Graham Tinsley is the handsome hero, and he has all the characteristics I enjoy most in a Regency gentleman. He’s known Eugenia most of his life, since he’s best friends with her brothers. In the beginning, he’s a bit clueless and doesn’t see her in any way other than affection, but as they spend time together, he quickly realizes how truly lovely and vivacious she is. He sees her kind nature.

I enjoyed Eugenia and Graham’s romance. It’s sweet, yet there is definitely a spark of electricity between them. Right from the beginning, I could see they were made for each other. I really wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy traditional Regency romances with characters you’ll fall in love with, and a plot that will have you sighing, then you will love Shining Knight as much as I did. I just realized I have the first book in this series on my Kindle and look forward to reading it. Happy reading!

Author Bio:

National bestselling author Elizabeth Johns was first an avid reader, though she was a reluctant convert. It was Jane Austen's clever wit and unique turn of phrase that hooked Johns when she was "forced" to read Pride and Prejudice for a school assignment. She began writing when she ran out of her favorite author's books and decided to try her hand at crafting a Regency romance novel. Her journey into publishing began with the release of Surrender the Past, book one of the Loring-Abbott Series. Johns makes no pretensions to Austen's wit but hopes readers will perhaps laugh and find some enjoyment in her writing.

Johns attributes much of her inspiration to her mother, a retired English teacher. During their last summer together, Johns would sit on the porch swing and read her stories to her mother, who encouraged her to continue writing. Busy with multiple careers, including a professional job in the medical field, author and mother, Johns squeezes in time for reading whenever possible.

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the electronic copy of When a Cowboy loves a Woman by Jennie Marts. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this delightful book prior to publication. My opinions are my own, and nothing has influenced my rating.

When a Cowboy loves a Woman is a well written western romance with an adorable heroine. The pacing kept me engaged from the beginning to the end. Ms. Marts gave me just enough description without going too far.

Elle Brooks is the heroine, and she’s such a sweet-natured character who has gone through a great deal of heart ache. She lost her husband and soon after suffered a miscarriage that devastated her. She can’t imagine ever opening her heart to another. While I’ve never been a widow, I could relate to her pain of loss of the only link she had of her late husband. I enjoyed her astonishment when the sexy veterinarian saves her from her house fire.

Brody Tate is the yummy hero. What is most appealing about Brody is his easy-going attitude and his unconditional love for his sweet daughter and his beloved animals. He has all the attributes I most admire in a hero.

The romance between Elle and Brody is sweet and both are hesitant after suffering the loss of their spouses. Elle Loved her late husband and it is difficult for her to move beyond her grief. Brody has also lost his wife, so both move slowly. For me that makes this romance more believable. I enjoyed the slow burn between them and wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy western romances with endearing characters and an emotionally charged plot, then you will love When a Cowboy loves a Woman as much as I did. I can’t wait to read the next book in this fantastic series. Happy reading!

Excerpt:

Claire collapsed onto the living room sofa the second she walked in the door. Not only had she suffered a headache the entire day, Cooper ran her like a trainer working an Iron Man competitor.

“That sounds like a bad day,” Jax said as she walked around the corner of the kitchen.

“You don’t want to know.”

Claire flung an arm over her eyes to block out the sun.

She heard Jax walk in the room and then exhale as she sat down. “You’re right. I don’t give a crap what happened in school, unless it involved Cooper. What I want is the details of last night after I got out of the car.”

Before Cooper picked them up, Claire and Jax had agreed that Jax would give them a few minutes to have a private conversation. Now Claire regretted that plan.

“The long story, or the short story?” Claire asked.

“Whatever one you want to deliver.”

Claire’s arms slid off her head, and she pushed herself into a sitting position.

“Cooper has a thing for me.”

Jax sat silent, blinked a few times. “Okay, and?”

“What do you mean, ‘okay, and?’”

“Sorry, Claire, but that’s obvious. I think you’d have to be an idiot to not see it. Even the guys on the team see it.”

“What? Are they talking about—”

Jax stopped her with a shake of the head. “Of course not. But you can tell by how they look at the two of you that they know there’s an attraction.”

Claire pointed to her chest. “I’m not doing anything, it’s him.”

“Maybe it’s more him.”

She kept shaking her head. “No, it’s all him. I’m not instigating anything.”

“You flirt with him all the time.”

“I do not,” Claire huffed.

One look from Jax and she rescinded her statement. “Okay, we banter. But it’s always been like that. I have the pool stick, he makes some kind of phallic joke. It’s banter. Not flirting.”

Jax sat back, crossed her arms over her chest. Claire couldn’t believe her best friend was calling her out. “We’re friends. And last night he ruined that by telling me he’s had a thing for me since we met. Told me he left sunny California for dreary London because I was too young and naive to handle him when I first got here.”

Jax narrowed her eyes. “Is that really how he said that?”

Claire’s headache was coming back. “No. He said I was a child.”

“A child?”

Claire stood up from the couch, started for the kitchen. “He kept repeating that I was eighteen back then.”

Jax followed behind. “Which is true.”

Claire yanked open the fridge, pulled out a beer. “Whose side are you on?”

“Yours. Always. But I just don’t see where all the fire is about this. Cooper owns up to the flirting comments and puppy-dog looks he gives you, and you’re pissed because he walked away six years ago.”

Like picking a lock, the pieces slid into place and finally started to click. “But he’s my friend.”

“Trying to say you’ve never thought of him as more?”

“No.” Her denial was quick.

Jax started to smile. “You’ve never checked out his ass? The guy can fill out a pair of jeans.”

Some of the anger she’d harbored all day eased. “That’s true.”

“And that smile. When he’s belly laughing he has the tiniest dimples.”

Claire closed her eyes, pictured his smile. She hadn’t noticed the dimples, but now that she thought about it . . . She opened her eyes to find Jax staring at her.

“Sounds like you have a thing for him,” Claire said.

“Wouldn’t matter if I did, and I don’t, by the way, but it wouldn’t matter. The guy can’t stop looking at you.”

“God, what am I going to do with him?”

“I don’t think you have to do anything. It’s not like he asked you out and you said no and now it’s awkward.”

“You’re right. It’s worse than that.”

“You’re overthinking it.” Jax pushed off the counter. “You know what, let’s gussy up a little and hit a proper happy hour. We’ll talk in German and pretend we don’t speak English and shamelessly flirt.”

Claire abandoned her beer. “Now that is exactly what I need to do and get my mind off of boys.”

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for providing me an electronic copy of Changing the Rules by Catherine Bybee. I voluntarily agree to read and review Catherine Bybee’s newest novel, Book 1 in the Richter series. My opinions are my own and are not influenced by the complimentary copy.

Changing the Rules is a great start on Ms. Bybee’s newest series. The pacing pulled me in early on and picked up speed in the second half of the book. By the end, the pacing moved like a freight train on steroids. The climax is amazing!

Claire Kelly is the heroine. She goes undercover at an expensive private high school in California. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book, but as I stated, it grabbed me at the half way point and kept me reading my Kindle as fast as possible.

Cooper Lockman is the hero. He has known Claire for years, but he took an assignment in Europe when Claire was still a teenager because the attraction between them as way too strong considering the age difference at that time.

When they end up at the private school, Claire as a student and Cooper as a track coach, the attraction threatens to burn them up, but now the age difference is no longer an issue. However, since he’s a teacher and she’s an undercover student, they can’t allow the attraction to consume them. Claire and Cooper are a fantastic couple, and I really wanted to see them together.

If you enjoy contemporary women’s fiction with plenty of suspense and a bit of angst, then you’ll love Changing the Rules as much as I did. This is the first book in MS. Bybee’s new series, and I can’t wait to read the next one. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the electronic copy of Deep River Promise by Jackie Ashenden. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this book prior to publication. My opinions are my own and nothing has influenced my rating.

Deep River Promise is a well written romance novel with engaging characters and an emotionally charged plot. The pacing pulled me in from the opening scene and kept me enmeshed until the last. After all, how does one resist a nude male on a balcony!

Astrid James is the heroine, and I became fully vested in her character right from the start. She has many aspects I most admire. She is a nurturer, and that comes through in her parenting of her fifteen-year-old son and how she manages the town of Deep River as the mayor.

Damon Fitzgerald is the yummy hero, and on his introduction, it’s clear he’s an extremely attractive male. He has some baggage from his youth that makes it difficult for him to have a meaningful relationship. While he’s not a player, he does keep tight control of his emotions. I enjoyed his back story and could understand his fears.

The romance between Astrid and Damon heats up fast and threatens to burn them up! The first sexual scene takes play in Astrid’s office. While I understood both the characters’ fears, I did experience some frustration with the hero. I had to do some deep thinking to fully accept why he was willing to let his past keep him so closed off. That is why I am not giving this book 5 Gold Crowns.

If you enjoy contemporary small-town romances, then you will love Deep River Promise as much as I did. The town folks stole my heart, especially Astrid’s son. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Ashenden, and I will certainly look at the first book in this enjoyable series. Happy reading!

Author Bio:

Jackie has been writing fiction since she was eleven years old. Mild mannered fantasy/SF/pseudo-literary writer by day, obsessive romance writer by night, she used to balance her writing with the more serious job of librarianship until a chance meeting with another romance writer prompted her to throw off the shackles of her day job and devote herself to the true love of her heart - writing romance. She particularly likes to write dark, emotional stories with alpha heroes who've just got the world to their liking only to have it blown wide apart by their kick-ass heroines.

She lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband, the inimitable Dr Jax and two kids. When she's not torturing alpha males and their gutsy heroines, she can be found drinking chocolate martinis, reading anything she can lay her hands on, wasting time on social media, or being forced to go mountain biking with her husband.

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and the author for the electronic copy of Revolutionary Kiss by Mary Kate Summers. An exciting historical novel set in Paris in the days leading to the French Revolution. My opinions are my own, and nothing has influenced them.

Revolutionary Kiss is a well written historical novel with engaging characters and a suspenseful plot. The pacing pulled me in from the first page and kept me enthralled until the last. I have always enjoyed novels set during this period of history, and this novel definitely gave me an excellent view of this fascinating time.

Nicole Vogel is the heroine and is an amazing character. There are areas of her memory that are not available to her, and her dreams are plagued by unexplained pockets of events that she feels are key to finding out how she ended up in the orphanage. I loved how this all played out.

The romance between Nicole and Luc Chatillon appealed to me greatly. It’s clear they can find true love if they can work through the mysteries of Nicole’s past. His fierce determination to save her touched me, and I wanted them to find their way to an abiding love.

If you enjoy well written historical romances that offer more substance, then you will love Revolutionary Kissas much as I did. This is a new author to me, and I’m so glad I decided to read this book. Happy reading!
