Publisher & Release: Independently Published, May 2, 2020

Time and setting:  Ancient Times, Roman Empire

Genre: Historical Romance

Length: 281 Pages

Rating: 5 Gold Crowns

Book Description:

Aurelia has always valued love and happiness over titles and power. Though her kind-hearted father has allowed her to turn away suitor after suitor in pursuit of a love she cannot yet define, when he dies her choices die with him. Knowing that marrying the elderly governor of a neighboring province can secure her mentally challenged brother's safety, she gives up on her dream of finding love in return for his protection.

Cassius is the ill-fated captain of the governor's guard tasked with escorting the Lady Aurelia and her unpleasant aunt to the governor's estate. Since the soothsayer Tullia foretold an early death for him, Cassius wants nothing more than to keep his hands busy with labor and his heart free from any connections to the world he believes he will be leaving soon. As they work through a series of misfortunes on the road to the governor’s province, the words of the soothsayer start to make sense, and together they find the courage to allow their true destiny to unfold.

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks goes to the author for bring Soothsayer by Kathryn Amurra to my attention. While Ms. Amurra offered me an advance reader copy, butI chose to purchase the book instead since I wasn’t sure it would grab me. My regret is, it took me way too long to move this to the top of my TBR list!

Soothsayer is set 115 CE in what is today, Lyon, France, but then part of the Roman Empire. The pacing pulled me in from the first page and kept me enmeshed until the last. This novel has the traditional romance arch, and Ms. Amurra does a credible job of sprinkling in enough of what it must have been like during this ancient time, but this novel is not historical fiction, instead it’s historical romance and that is the central focus of this book. That in no way took away from my enjoyment.

Aurelia’s the heroine of this tale, and her loyalty to her disabled brother gained my desire to read her story. Her willingness to sacrifice herself to protect him touched my heart, and I quickly became fully vested in her character. In no way does she come across as a martyr though.

Cassius is the hero, a captain for the Governor’s guard is tasked with delivering Aurelia to him as his bride. At first, I expected this to be an enemies to lovers troupe which is not one I’m overly fond of, but this tale turns quickly as the two main characters find common ground.

The romance between Aurelia and Cassius appears ill-fated from the start. Her obligation to her brother keeps her locked into what will be a loveless marriage to the elderly Governor. Thank goodness this is romance, so held hope they would find a way to be together.

If you enjoy romance set in an historical setting with just enough detail to sweep the reader to the long-ago time, then you will love Soothsayer as much as I did. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. Happy reading!

Excerpt:

Aurelia watched as Cassius struck again, and again, each strike more forceful than the last. She could see from the way he brought down the sword with each try the mounting tension in his body. Finally, no more than two steps into the field of thorns, Cassius growled a barely audible curse, then turned to face Aurelia. He wiped the sweat off his brow with the back of his hand, his chest visibly rising and falling as he tried to catch his breath.

She knew better than to say anything, and in any case the intensity of his eyes as he looked at her told her everything she needed to know.

As his breathing slowed and his temper cooled, he sheathed his sword and stepped closer to her. “These vines do not intend to be cut today, but perhaps we do not need them to be cut. My lady, please forgive the impropriety of this request, but if you will follow my instructions, I think we may be able to make some progress against this terrible field of thorns.”

Aurelia replied without hesitation. “Ask, and I will do as you say.”

Looking as though he had expected more of a fight, Cassius nodded. “Please, if you would come closer, my lady.”

Ignoring the lightness in her stomach at his request, Aurelia moved closer to him.

“If we cannot cut the stubborn vines, then perhaps we can move them away, far enough and for long enough a time that we may pass by.”

He took his shield in his left hand and held it in front of him. It was an oval piece of wood covered in leather that extended from his shoulders to his knees.

“I will hold my shield in position and move forward through the brambles, as though charging the enemy. If you will walk closely behind me—and I mean closer than my own shadow—then I can be your shield, and we can both get through to the other side. Do you understand?”

“I do,” she began, “but your shield is not big enough to protect you from the thorns.”

“It is true, I would give anything for my legionary's shield at this moment, but this shield is what we have, and it will do.”

He took a breath and turned around to face the enemy thorns.

She stood a couple steps behind him and did not move.

He turned his head to look at her and motioned for her to come to him with his free hand. “My lady,” he said, almost shyly.

Aurelia felt a tingling in her chest, but took a step toward him.

“My lady, I cannot protect you unless you are right behind me. Please.”

She took another step, until her toes were nearly touching his heels.

“I sincerely apologize for the seeming impropriety of what I am about to suggest, but, if you would, please, have your feet touch mine, so that we may take each step as one. And I think it may be easier if you would—if you don't mind, that is—put your arms about my chest and bury your head in my back. Just let me lead you. Trust me, my lady.”

“I trust you, Cassius,” she said, just loud enough for him to hear. She had not intended on saying his name.

Cassius nodded, then looked away from her and raised his arms. She appreciated the fact that he could not watch her tentative movements as she willed each arm to be raised to the level of her chest, her hands still gripping the edges of the cloak he had put on her. She slid her feet forward until her toes touched the heels of the soldier's shoes, at the same time bringing her arms full circle around his broad chest.

She felt his right hand gently grip each of her wrists in turn through the cloak she still held tightly in her balled fists and pull her arms more closely against him, until she had no choice but to allow the fronts of her thighs, abdomen, and chest to be pressed against his body.

She swallowed hard and, closing her eyes, brought her forehead to rest against the soldier's back. At her touch, she felt his strong body tense up, then gradually relax.

“Are you ready, my lady?”

She answered softly, speaking into his back. “Yes”

Publisher & Release: Kensington Books

Setting:  WWII, Pipley, England

Rating: 2.5 Gold Crowns

Book Description:

Though war rages across mainland Europe and London is strafed by German aircraft, the little village of Pipley in Hertfordshire bustles along much as it always has. Adrift since her best friend, George, joined the Royal Air Force, twenty-two-year-old Olive Bright fills her days by helping at her father’s veterinary practice and tending to her beloved racing pigeons. Desperate to do her bit, Olive hopes that the National Pigeon Service will enlist Bright Lofts’ expertise, and use their highly trained birds to deliver critical, coded messages for His Majesty’s Forces.

The strangers who arrive in Pipley are not from the NPS. Instead, Jameson Aldridge and his associate are tied to a covert British intelligence organization known as Baker Street. If Olive wants her pigeons to help the war effort, she must do so in complete secrecy. Tired of living vicariously through the characters of her beloved Agatha Christie novels, Olive readily agrees. But in the midst of her subterfuge, the village of Pipley is dealing with another mystery. Local busybody Miss Husselbee is found dead outside Olive’s pigeon loft. Is the murder tied to Olive’s new assignment? Or did Miss Husselbee finally succeed in ferreting out a secret shameful enough to kill for? Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the complimentary audio copy of Olive Bright, Pigeoneer by Stephanie Graves and narrated by Rachael Beresford. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this audio book prior to publication. My opinion are my own, and no one has influenced them.

Olive Bright, Pigeoneer is set in a sleepy British village during WWII. I listened to the audio and struggled with focusing on the story, but it was not because of the narrator. Rachael Beresford has a lovely voice, but the story just wasn't compelling enough. The characters didn’t pull me in, and the pacing is slow. I am being kind in giving it three crowns. Normally, I thoroughly enjoy novel set during WWII, and found the premise of carrier pigeons intriguing, so I truly wanted to like this book.

Olive Bright’s character is extremely impulsive and determined to break the rules to such an extent, it kept me from liking her. She seemed much younger than her age. Her willingness to deceive her father did not sit well with me.

This was supposed to be a mystery, but it never pulled me in as this genre usually does. While there is murder, spying, and some suspense, it fell flat for me, but that may not be the case for others. Reading is subjective, and what appeals to one reader doe not to another. I fell in that second category. Happy reading and listening!

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for a complimentary copy of Boone: Eternity Springs by Emily March. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this novel prior to publication. My opinions are my own, and no one has influenced them.

Boone: Eternity Springs is a great addition to The McBrides of Texas series. The pacing kept me engaged from the first page to the last. The book is well written with engaging characters and a plot that will touch your heart.

Hannah Dupree’s character is such a tortured soul with personal losses few can handle, but she is determined to do it. While taking a cleansing journey, she stumbles upon the enchanting town of Eternity Springs. She feels it’s a place of solace, a place where she can heal.

Boone McBride is a compelling hero who hides his pain behind his smooth-talking ways and astonishing good looks. When he accepts custody for an infant from a young woman he believes he failed, he’s determined to be the best father possible. Although he has a lot of complications in his life, he can’t resist Hannah. In her, he senses another wounded soul, and he wants to help her find peace.

The romance between Hannah and Boone is lovely. Since both of them are recovering from their troubled past, they fit together from the beginning, and I truly wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy contemporary romance that has a character-driven plot with the amazing characters from the Eternity Springs series, then you will love Boone as much as I did. While this can easily be read as a stand-alone novel, I encourage you to read Ms. March’s Eternity Springs series. It’s amazing. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the author and Net-Galley for the complimentary copy of The Accidental Heiress by Cj Fosdick. I volunteered to read and review this novel prior to publication. My opinions are my own, and no one has influenced them.

The Accidental Heiress is a lovely tale with compelling characters and an intriguing plot. The pacing is excellent and kept me enmeshed in the story from the beginning to the end. This has a delightful mystery that unfolds throughout the book. The only thing that keeps me from giving this novel 5 Gold Crowns is because, at times, I would lose track of what was happening when the story jumps to the past.

Jessica is the heroine of this novel. She is, at last, on her honeymoon when the plane she’s on plunges into the Shannon River. Her fear when she doesn’t find her husband is visceral and helped me bond with her character right away. After traveling through time to find each other, she can’t lose him. Fortunately, they both survive and are in the same time period.

Robbie is the hero and has many facets to his character that come to light as they visit the home where he grew up–more than one hundred years ago. He’s confused by things he learns happened after he immigrated to America. One thing that never changes is his love for his wife.

While there is a love story in this story, they are already in love and have been married for three years. When he learns he’d left a pregnant Livy when he immigrated from Ireland, it causes a great deal of guilt and confusion he must work through, along with fears he could end up traveling back in time, leaving Jessica and their children. That must be resolved for them to return to the firm foundation of their marriage prior to coming on their honeymoon. I thoroughly enjoyed their emotional journey!

If you enjoy time travel romances with characters that will grab you and not let go, along with an intriguing plot, then you will love The Accidental Heiress as much as I did. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Fosdick, and I will be looking at her backlist. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the complimentary e-copy of Awakening His Shy Cinderella by Sophie Pembroke. I volunteered to read and review this book in advance of publication. My opinions are mine, and no one has influenced them.

Awakening His Shy Cinderella is a lovely romance with engaging characters and a heartfelt plot. The pacing pulled me in from the first page to the last. This is a Cinderella troupe with a waif character who finds her steel!

Rachel is our heroine, and in the beginning she’s unable to see her worth because of her vicious stepsisters and stepmother. Even her father doesn’t care for her, but when an opportunity comes her way to utilize her amazing talents, she comes alive. She finds her inner strength to take on her family.

Damon is the hero, and of course, he’s gorgeous, and a truly good guy. At first he wants Rachel for her incredible skills, but as he spends time with her, he realizes her true worth and wants to win her heart.

The romance between Rachel and Damon brings growth to both characters, and I enjoyed reading about their transformation. The chemistry between them is easily apparent from the beginning, so I really wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy contemporary romances with characters that show tremendous growth and an interesting plot then you will love Awakening His Shy Cinderella. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Pembroke, and I will be looking for other novels by her. Happy reading!

Book Review with Featured Author: I Was Called Barabbas by M.D. House

I was Called Barabbas by M.D. House

Publisher & Release: Self-Published, September 25,2019

Time and setting:  Ancient Times, The Holy Land

Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

Length: 221 Pages

Rating: 5 Gold Crowns

Book Description:

We know precious little of the man called Barabbas, a contemporary of Jesus of Nazareth. He is variously described in the historical record as thief, murderer, rebel, and notable Roman prisoner. His release by the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate was part of the supernal plan for the Christ to offer himself as the ultimate blood sacrifice, but it’s doubtful Barabbas understood any of that at the time.

Many have wondered what became of him, or rather, who he became after that fateful day. Someday we will know the answer, but in the meantime we can imagine that, like all of us, he too sought a path of personal redemption, imperfectly.

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the author for the complimentary copy of I Was Called Barabbas by M.D. House. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this book. My opinions are my own, and no one has influenced them.

I Was Called Barabbas is novel about  the thief and murderer Pontius Pilate released instead of Jesus Christ. This is a fictional depiction and is not based on Barabbas’ life. I found the story fascinating, and the pacing pulled me in from the beginning and kept me enmeshed until the end.

Barabbas is a Jew who lived in Jesus’ time. After he’s released, he flees and roams place to place until he finally returns to his home. He weds the young woman he loves and uses his skills as  tent maker to support his family. His wife is part of the people who believe Jesus is the son of God and that he died and rose from the dead. She is part of the community who follow the apostles of Jesus.

Barabbas has a belief system, but he is sure he can never be forgiven for his sins. He longs for the peace his wife has, but knows he can never have it. As the story progresses, he helps the Christians several times. This is a story of redemption and conversion.

If you enjoy Christian Historical fiction with an amazing conversion story and characters who will touch your soul, then you will love I Was Called Barabbas as much as I did. I’m so glad I agreed to read this incredible novel. Happy reading!

PRAISE:

“A very interesting and fun read. Mr. House must have done a lot of research into the politics and history of the day to really make you feel like you were living at the time. Loved the character background and growth of the man we know very little about. The story really pulled me in and kept me guessing what would happen next. I’m already looking forward to the sequel!”

-       Charles Whittington, Amazon reviewer

The author has narrated a heart-wrenching tale of Barabbas rather beautifully. We are walking beside him throughout the story. His life was unpredictable, but it is what keeps him moving. I'm eagerly waiting for the next part.

-       Amina Thajudeen, Goodreads reviewer

A fascinating look into what the life of Barabbas, released in the place of Jesus, might have been like.
