Excerpt

Zoe shivered as the wind picked up and swirled the fallen leaves around her feet. The tree branches above her head had started to sway in the wind and brushed against her head scarf. She looked around the grounds, which were cast in shadows. It was a moonless night and the smell of rain hung in the air adding to her growing annoyance. They were standing just outside their backdoor. Eva had one hand resting on the panel, and Zoe put her arms around her waist and rested her head against her back.
“It’s getting cold. Can we hurry up?”
Zoe heard Eva’s quiet chuckle as she went about unlocking the door. “You have the patience of a flea, and just so you know, the flea is probably deeply offended,” Eva whispered making both of them laugh. A soft click was all that was heard when Eva slid the bolt as quietly as she could make it. “All done.”
“What was that?”
“That was the bolt, love. I muffled the noise.”
It still amazed Zoe every time she saw Eva use one of her gifts.
Eva slowly pushed the door open only to hear a loud scraping noise. She turned around and stared wide eyed at Zoe.
“What is a chair doing there?”
Zoe sighed. “My fault. I told Berta to put a chair there.”
“You do know that if someone wanted to break in, they can go through those large windows?”
“It made sense at the time,” Zoe whispered as they entered the kitchen.
“I love you dearly but sometimes you just do the funniest things.”
“I know.” Zoe giggled. She pulled Eva’s shirt and Eva stopped and turned around. “Can you feel them?”
“Yes. Two humans.”
“At least they’re not demons, because that would require more than my gun.”
“I’m pretty sure even the demons fear you.”
“Ha ha, smarty pants. Let’s go scare the idiots inside. They are bound to have heard the chair.”
“Maybe they didn’t.”
A gentle thump-thump above their heads indicated whoever was up there was on the move. “Okay, let’s go.” Zoe took the safety lock off her gun. She was about to move forward when she felt Eva’s arms around her. They held each other for a moment and then Eva kissed her on the head. Without another word, Zoe edged forward with Eva behind her. Eva’s height was enough to warn Zoe if anything was coming and she had a clear line of sight to whatever was coming towards them.
Zoe came to the entrance of the living room and stopped. She looked up into the darkened ceiling. The intruders were up there and they were slowly heading their way.

Excerpts
Excerpt One

You grabbed my hand, dragging me after you down the warren of side streets behind the shops.

It was pelting down now. Even though I was soaked, I was still buzzing from the barney.

At last you stopped, shoving me up against a brick wall at the back entrance to a butcher’s.

‘Look,’ I said hurriedly, ‘I’m sorry about--’

‘Thanks.’

Questioningly, I tilted my nut. Your lips were close to mine. All I’d need to do was…

You pulled back (of course you bloody did), even if you were still clutching onto me, as if my body was yours.

Because no matter what other nasties you might do with it, you’d never kiss your slave, would you?

Then you suddenly hauled me closer, and we were snogging.

At that moment, none of it meant anything.

Slave or Mistress. First Lifer or Blood.

It never does when skin meets skin. It was just Light and Grayse.

So it was a good kiss. To me, it changed everything. But to you..?

‘If you would be so kind, some of us are trying to feed in peace.’ A nasal but polite Turkish Blood Lifer popped his nut up from further down the alley.

He licked down the neck of a twitching First Lifer bird, who was propped up against a skip.

When you shrieked and tried to jerk away, I held you still by the wrist.

I shrugged. ‘Yeah, my mistake.’

Your peepers were now flint.

I started edging you backwards out of the shadows. Now wasn’t the time to give you a crash course on Blood Lifer dinner etiquette.

It seems, however, that our Turkish friend was determined to educate me. ‘You know, young one, it is most inconsiderate to interrupt a fellow’s kill. I had no intention to do so with yours.’

EXCERPT TWO

‘London’s not yours.’

I stiffened. ‘The Lost have walked these streets as long as you humans,’ I whispered, low and intense, ‘which makes them ours, as much as yours.’

I might as well have clouted you. You drew back, with a shiver. ‘You hunt here – parasitically. But England? The world? It belongs to us. You’re just…’
‘Parasites?’ I offered. You didn’t even have the decency to look away.

‘These are my streets,’ you tapped the sticky table for emphasis, in a boozer, street, postcode you’d never have ventured into, if it hadn’t been for me.

I took a drag of my e-cig. ‘Over hundred and fifty years says different, sweetheart.’

You wore that narked expression, which I’d hoped we’d left behind for the night. ‘My home. Not yours.’

‘Any reason it can’t be both?’

‘On account of you’re…’ You stopped yourself, pushing your Guinness away with a jerky shove. Your shoulders slumped. You finished softly, ‘…not human.’

‘Right. Because I’d missed that.’ I took a mouthful of nuts, munching thoughtfully. You’d withdrawn hermit-crab like, your hair falling in two curtains over your mug. ‘There were humans once, who thought like you, the last time a Blood Lifer had the courage to reveal himself to a First Lifer. It was one of my ancestors. A man of reason, in an age of superstition. He reckoned our two species could live out in the open - side by side - so I was told. These First Lifers? They thought he was the devil.’ You’d raised your nut. I could see your peepers - dark grey now - through the veil of your hair.

‘What..?’

‘They burnt him.’

Book Review: Brette: Intentions Gone Astray by Collette Cameron

Brette: Intentions Gone Astray by Collette Cameron

Publisher & Release: Blue Rose Romance, January 10, 2017

Time and setting:  1822, London

Genre: Historical Romance/Regency

Book Length: 174 pages

Heat Level: 2 Flames

Rating: 4.25 Gold Crowns

Book Description:

He thought his adventures were over...

A rogue reluctantly turned rector, Alexander Hawksworth, prefers soirées to sermons and parties to prayers. Though impoverished, he seizes every opportunity to escape parish duties, preferring to hob nob with London's finest-especially after the precocious and petite Brette Culpepper arrives in Town. Alex secretly fantasizing about claiming the breathtaking beauty as his very own, and when he unexpectedly inherits an earldom, he's determined to make her his countess... Until he's accused of murdering the previous earl.

Then she burst headlong into his life...

New to Society, Brette adores the whirlwind social scene, the stream of invitations... the slightly-sensual verbal sparring with the devilishly attractive, much too witty, and oh so unsuitable Mr. Hawksworth. But her fairy tale existence crashes to a halt when rumors circulate she's a peer's illegitimate granddaughter. Even though he's left her a tidy inheritance, formerly hospitable doors slam in her face as a newly appointed guardian emerges, intent on stealing her wealth and forcing her to wed an elderly despot.

Time is against them as Alex struggles to clear his name and deliver the woman he loves from an unthinkable fate.

Vikki’s Musings

Collette Cameron is fast becoming an author I can count on for witty banner, emotional writing, and engaging characters. I’m so pleased that I had a chance to read her newest release. I received an ARC from the author, and I am happy to write a review with my honest opinion. Brette: Intentions Gone Astray is a delightful romp through Regency England!

Brette Culpepper sees herself a bit of a matchmaker. She relishes the opportunity to pair couples together. Unfortunately, many times, the matches lead to scandal as has her latest attempt. An unlikely rescuer steps in, the vicar Alexander Hawksworth.

Alex has an unrequited passion for Brette, but as a third in line for a title, but oceans apart from ever inheriting, he is not a fit suitor for the delightful Miss Culpepper. When tragedy strikes and his cousin the earl and his heir perish in a fire, Alex become the Earl. Now, the only thing that stands in his way is the suspicious happenings regarding his cousins’ death.

Brette is not having an easy time either. She has discovered she is not her father’s daughter and could possibly be illegitimate. Although she is now an heiress, society shuns her. Also, her grandfather’s heir is demanding custody since she is underage.

In a race against time, will Alex be able to save her and become worthy of her love?

Brette: Intentions Gone Astray is a lovely Regency historical that will sweep you back to the time of that period. The dialogue is true to the period without coming across stiff. I loved the banter between the heroine and the hero.

Brette is an endearing character. She loves her sisters and the man who has raised her as his daughter. She is crushed when she learns of her suspicious origins and the connection with the Duke of Bellingshire. I could feel her confusion and pain. It had me brushing away a few tears on more than one occasion.

Alex is a devil may care fellow, unsuited to the role of vicar, although, he does have a generous heart and works tirelessly to help the unfortunate. He knows he loves Brette, but believes he is unworthy. Even after he inherits the title, he still feels it is impossible for them to find happiness. I had great empathy for his character and wanted him the win the girl.

The chemistry between Brette and Alex sizzles. Ms. Cameron is a master at building sexual tension, a hallmark of historical romance. That aspect of this sub-genre is why I love reading it, along with becoming lost in another time and place.

I highly recommend Brette: Intentions Gone Astray, especially if you enjoy a great Regency romance that will have you laughing and crying throughout the story. I look forward to reading other books by this talented author. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

Last Night with the Duke is book 1 in Amelia Grey’s new series, The Rakes of St. James. I received an invitation from the publisher via Net-Galley to read and review. The book description sounded enticing, so I accepted.

This novel is a sweet story, one that put a smile on my face. The pacing is steady and so the story moved along well. The characters are very likable, especially Josephine and her little dog Napoleon. My heart ached for the child at times. She had a difficult time, and the little dog helps her heal from losing her beloved father.

Esmeralda Swift has a lot to contend with, between keeping her twelve-year-old sister safe, a roof over their heads and her business running smoothly while earning their livelihood. When the Duke of Griffin comes to her agency to hire a chaperone to square his twin sisters around society, she is excited until he tells her he wants her to personally do it. How can she keep her business running if she accepts his financially adventitious offer?

The Duke does not take no for an answer. When he sees something he wants, he pursues it relentlessly. Esmeralda is perfect for his sisters, so he gives her an offer she cannot refuse, even when she makes a few outrageous demands of her own, thinking to discourage him.

Now that he has her ensconced in his home, he needs to keep her at arm’s length. After all, he is a gentleman and must not dally with an employee, no matter how tempting. Can he keep his desires in check for the delightful Miss Swift, or will he crumble beneath the overwhelming attraction for her?

Esmeralda is an endearing heroine with many redeeming characteristics. She is loyal to her sister, determined to protect her charges from rakes and ner-do-wells while holding the charming duke at bay. Her attraction to him is fierce, but her integrity keeps her from giving into her desire. I loved the tender care she shows for her mischievous little sister. For me, that part of the story was the most enjoyable.

Griffin is a great hero, a reformed rake, trying to do right by his irascible twin sisters and his elderly great-aunt. I enjoyed his struggle to rein in the amazing attraction for Esmeralda when all he wanted to do was bind her to him. I enjoyed to camaraderie he has with his two friends as well.

Now, what did not work for me. The romance was not the true central focus of this novel. While there is chemistry between Griffin and Esmeralda, it takes too long to heat up. They don’t even kiss until around 67% of the story. For me, I would have liked more stolen kisses between the hero and heroine much sooner in the story.

If you enjoy traditional Regency romance with endearing characters and a sweet storyline with several enchanting moments, then you will enjoy Last Night with the Duke. If like heat with your romance, then this might not be the book for you. Nonetheless, I did enjoy many aspects of this story and will probably read the next book. Happy reading!

As the threats against her continue to mount, Sara must decide what’s more important—her duty or her heart.

About the Author

A former English teacher, Cecelia combines two of her passions, romance novels and the middle ages, in debut novel The Thief’s Countess. Combining alpha male types and strong female heroines, Cecelia transports readers to an admittedly romanticized time of knights and castles.

After reading Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught, she started a manuscript twenty years ago when medieval romance was at its height of mainstream popularity. Picking it back up in 2015 when vampires and highlanders reigned supreme, Cecelia stuck to the genre she loved and brought medieval England back to life.

She lives in Northeast, Pennsylvania with her husband and two young children where she can be found either planning a Disney trip, watching period dramas or convincing her children to watch Star Wars. She is firmly House Stark and Gryffindor.

Vikki’s Musings

Montana Mornings is the third book in Kim Law’s fantastic series, The Wildes of Birch Bay and an excellent addition. When I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, I eagerly agreed to read and review. The first book in this series, Montana Cherries, struck me at my core. Montana Mornings has accomplished that as well.

Erica Bird comes to Birch Bay to fill in for a teacher who is out on maternity leave. Imagine her surprise when she discovers her most challenging pupil is the daughter of her college boyfriend. Sparks zing from their first confrontation/encounter. While she desperately wants to help his daughter, she is wary of getting too attached. After all, in addition to having a past with this guy, they also live next to each other, and she has her own issues to work through.

Gabe Wilde is trying to fill the role of Dad and Mom. After years of conflict with his soon-to-be ex-wife, he has moved home and is now a teacher and coach. This is a demanding career for a man who has a troubled child. When he learns that his daughter’s teacher is the girl he broke up with to pursue the woman he married, he knows he’ll need to proceed with caution.

Can Gabe find the right path that will not only heal his daughter but restore his faith in himself and allow him to find his way back to the woman he should have married, to begin with?

Montana Mornings touched my heart from the first page to the last. I became enmeshed with the hero and heroine immediately. The story is compelling, and the pacing is excellent. Ms. Law certainly knows how to pull her readers in and keep them to the end.

Erica’s character has many layers. She has a passion for teaching. She is loyal to her family, and she can love ferociously. She can also make bad decisions that affect her personal self-worth. Now, she must learn how to live with her bad choice and pick up the strands of her life, so she can again be the person she always thought she was. She is afraid to rush into a relationship with Gabe for a variety of good reasons. I could feel her anguish and heart-ache, her fear. I truly wanted her to find her happy ending.

Gabe Wilde carries a lot of baggage from growing up with a narcissistic mom and living with his soon-to-be ex-wife, who is just as bad. He desperately wants to help his daughter but lacks confidence that he can when she keeps acting out. His character has deep-seated issues, ones he must work through. His re-kindled relationship with Erica is problematic because he has not cut all ties with his wife. He questions what he can offer, but he craves the serenity he feels when he’s with Erica. I loved Gabe’s determination to succeed. He’s fearless when it comes to protecting his daughter. He’s willing to take a chance on love again, even though he has every reason to resist.

If you are looking for a novel that has more substance that most stories, then you will love Montana Mornings as much as I did. It was great getting to see the other characters from the previous two books in the series, and I can’t wait to read the next one. The Wilde family is a fascinating one. Happy reading!
