Vikki’s Musings
I am a huge fan of Shana Galen’s wonderful, adventurous tales of love and mayhem. When I received an invitation from the publisher to read and review The Rogue You Know in exchange for an honest review, I eagerly accepted. Out of all of Ms. Galen’s books that I have read, I have yet to read one that did not fulfill my historical romance fetish. This book is another great romp through the streets of regency England.
Lady Susanna feels so suffocated by her mother’s domineering attitude that she finds it hard to breathe. Her overprotective ways are so bad, she cannot even go to the retiring room on her own. When she finally escapes her mother’s watchful eye, a chance encounter with Lady Litton, gives her a clue to why her mother is so determined to shelter her.
Gideon Harrow is a thief and on the run from Beezle, the new arch rogue of the Covent Garden Cubs, a band of thieves and pickpockets, a group he is a member of. He takes shelter at his friend, Marlowe’s new residence and is discovered by Susanna.
Susanna is determined to visit Vauxhall Gardens, that is where Lady Litton tells her, her mother’s secret is. She grabs the precious gem necklace from Gideon and hides it, then tells him she will not give it back until he takes her to the famous garden.
This starts Susanna’s fantastic journey through the underbelly of London. Will Susanna and Gideon band together to outrun their pursuers and along the way find a love to last a lifetime?
When Lady Susanna is first introduced, I was not sure I would like her because she seemed so timid, but let me tell you, SHE IS NOT TIMID! Once she starts on her grand adventure, she becomes fearless, a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. I fell in love with her character and really wanted her to gain what she desired, truly a delightful heroine. Ms. Galen writes strong female characters and Lady Susanna is certainly that.
Gideon Harrow seems like the most unlikely hero for Susanna, but he is the perfect man for her. His character’s loyalty, determination and honor comes through loud and clear. In this case, a rogue truly can be true to his own code of conduct, and a gentleman, although his birth is far below genteel. I loved how he tried to protect Susanna from her madcap ways.
While the romance happens between Gideon and Susanna incredibly fast--theirs is a true case of love at first sight--I still found it very believable. The chemistry between this great couple sizzles from their first meeting and throughout the rest of the book. Their wild adventure is so intense, it allows for the romance to develop very fast. They are a wonderful hero and heroine and fantastic together as a couple.
I highly recommend this exciting, action-packed tale of love between two amazing characters. If you like stories very fast-paced that keep you on your toes, then you will delight in this great read. If you have never read any of Shana Galen’s books, you are missing out. The Rogue You Know is a stellar example of all that I love about her writing. Happy reading!

Guest Post: Bad Boy Inspiration by Shana Galen

When we think about Regency England, we tend to think of the balls, the carriages, the gowns. We forget that for every duke or marquess, there were hundreds of thieves and pickpockets living in the slums of the city. Covent Garden was an area of London with plenty of rookeries, and the thieves who lived there often banded together because there’s protection in numbers. My fictional gang called the Covent Garden Cubs is made up of the leader Satin, his second-in-command Beezle, and an assortment of pickpockets and house-breakers with names like Gap, Racer, and Stub. The gang also has one girl, Marlowe, and I wrote about her in Earls Just Want to Have Fun. Her best friend in the gang in Gideon, and he’s the hero in The Rogue You Know. Gideon is the ultimate bad boy who can cheat, lie, and steal with the best of them. He was orphaned at a young age and had no choice but to steal to survive. Now Gideon wants a different life for himself, and if he can just complete one last job, he’ll have it…or die trying.

When writing about my bad boy hero, I had plenty of inspiration.

1)       Flynn Rider from Tangled
Yes, I know Flynn is animated, but he is the main inspiration for Gideon. Like the Disney bad boy, Gideon is charming, funny, and self-deprecating. Flynn makes no apologies for his lifestyle, and while he may try to hide his sensitive side, his love for Rapunzel brings it out.

2)       George Gordon Byron, Baron Byron
Byron was a poet, nobleman, and ultimate bad boy. Described as “mad, bad, and dangerous to know,” Byron titillated the Regency world. He generated enormous debts, had numerous affairs and liaisons, and ultimately died young and tragically abroad. A bad boy with the heart of a romantic is always an inspiration.

3)       Danny in Grease
We’ve all seen Grease so many times we forget that Travolta’s character was really a bad boy. He’s dangerous for Sandy’s reputation and just plain dangerous, period. But like any bad boy we love, love wins Danny over and he’s willing to change to be with the woman who means everything.

4)       Patrick in 10 Things I Hate About You
I love a bad boy who sets out to corrupt the good girl and then is corrupted by her instead. Heath Ledger is fabulous as the new kid in school who agrees to date the heroine…for a fee. “How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways.” The banter between Patrick and Kat makes this bad boy movie memorable.

5)       Nick Gentry in Worth Any Price by Lisa Kleypas
While Gideon may be on the wrong side of the law and Nick Gentry a Bow Street Runner, Nick definitely serves as an inspiration. He’s a man with a dark past and much to hide, but Charlotte is able to peel away the layers one by one. Her love for him, and his for her, redeems this bad boy and makes us love him all the more.

I enjoyed taking inspiration from each of these bad boys and creating the character of Gideon. He may be a thief and a rogue, but he is also capable of deep love. And that’s what my books are about—characters for whom love changes everything.

Who are your favorite redeemed rogues?

Historical Fiction

Casting Lots is the tale of how a Greek slave, Lucinius, becomes an influential religious leader and literary figure in the First Century A.D.  His spiritual awakening is prompted by an unlikely mentor, a Centurion, who was at the crucifixion.

Lucinius is ordered by his master to assemble the stories told by eye-witnesses to the life and death of Jesus Christ.  Cornelius was the Centurion at the Crucifixion. Cornelius is hated by the Jews and the Romans.  He is haunted by the Crucifixion because he won the shroud worn by Christ in a game of dice.  He takes Lucinius on a journey throughout the Empire and tells him what seem to be fantastic stories about famous Romans during the era of the Republic, some 100 years ago.  These stories contain elements which Cornelius could not possibly know, unless he is making them up or unless there is some other explanation.

The book answers the question of who wrote the Gospel of Luke and why he wrote it.  The book answers the question of who is Cornelius and why he said Jesus was an innocent man at his Crucifixion.   Thus, it is a tale of the two men's spiritual journeys.

Excerpt

I walked to his home again. The streets were crowded and the world’s smells washed over me: the sweat of the men, the perfumes of the women, the urine of the animals, bread baking, cloth just cut, fruit drying on the stands, gutters of the streets, leather being tanned. Sweet, pungent, acrid, acidic, salty, bitter, biting smells grabbed my nostrils as if I smelled these for the first time. The smells were counterpoint to the sounds of the city. The hammer of the artist cracking tiles, rocks, and glass to make mosaics, bleating of sheep and lowing of cows as they awaited slaughter, the rumble of wagons carrying bolts of cloth, or carcasses of meat and exotic goods along the cobblestone streets, the tramp of soldiers’ caligae, their hob-nails clicking on stone, as they marched, crying babies needing to be nursed, yelling mothers trying to find lost children, heralds blaring out the whereabouts of some legion killing some barbarians somewhere on some frontier, tax collectors demanding payment of tax, while the taxpayer screamed insults or begged for mercy, and the sound of my heart pounding so hard that it might burst, blended together in a discordant cacophony of life. If the smells did not grab your attention, or if the sounds did not demand your notice, then the play of light would surely command your consideration. The light side-by-side with the dark was sharp, stark, defined, and distinct, as where the land ends and the seas begin. You walked most of the time in the shadow of the tall insulae, the apartment buildings, fearing that from the darkness above would flow that most unsavory of liquids. Then the sunlight blaring from a blue crystal-clear sky dazzled your eyes, when you walked across some broad street. The brilliant sun radiated off the temples’ gold-leaf veneers. You were in the presence of the Gods. All the while, I thought about how I could approach him. An offer of money, I thought, would only insult and repel him. The quest of my master disgusted and dismayed him. Before I had decided what to do and how to do it, I was there at his door. “Damno ad averno!” (“Damn it to hell!”) Cornelius spat as spoke these words as if the spitting added to the curse. “I will wait until you tell me.” I stood resolutely. “What?” “I will wait until you tell me.” I sat down and smiled slightly. “Get underfoot, eh?” “If necessary.” “All day and all night?” he asked. “If necessary.” He turned into the darkness of his home. I waited. Time passed. Then I saw him coming back, his vitis rudis, that is his vine hand. No true centurion was ever without the symbol of his authority, his vitis rudis, gnarled and worn. “Do you think a man who has wielded this,” he gestured with his vitis rudis, “will ever break?” “Do you think that a slave who has been beaten all of his life will fear one more beating?” “Well, that is the first thing you have said that makes any sense at all!” He smiled.

When I agreed to participate in this tour for Into the Unknown, I was very excited to read and review this book. I have read several WWII romances over the last year and enjoyed them a great deal. Into the Unknown gave a great deal of insight into what it must have been like to live during this terrible war.

Since the book description gives just the right amount of information, I will forego doing any type of synopsis. Ms. Peel has interwoven the history of this time with a masterful touch into an interesting and unique love story. I was pulled into the story right away. I loved the growing relationship between Kate and Charlie until I reached the 70% point of the book. After that I became disenchanted. Without giving too much away, I’ll just say that Kate’s reaction to the event that happens at that point of the story was out of character for her and changed the flow of the story for me.

As a story of the times, this is a fantastic look at how it must have been for couples during WWII. Kate and Charlie rarely got to see each other, going months and more in between visits. I could grasp how difficult it must have been to keep a relationship going, and how easily a couple could grow apart. Kate and Charlie suffered tremendous loss. While Kate soldiered on, Charlie did not deal with his loss nearly as well, which weakened their connection.

I thoroughly enjoyed the historical elements of Into the Unknown and for that alone, I am glad I read this book. It’s unfortunate that for me the love story fell apart. However, the book does have a satisfying ending. If you want to read a great account of WWII and the impact it had on relationships, then I recommend reading Into the Unknown. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

When I read the book description for The Great Estate, I found it intriguing. I am a huge Downton Abbey fan and have recently read some books written in this era and enjoyed them a great deal. Sherri Browning has written a fine addition to her Thornbrook Park series. This is the first book by Ms. Browning I have read, but it will not be the last.

Sophia, Countess of Averford made a grave mistake when she allows another man to kiss her. Even though her husband had become distracted, she should have never given in the kiss. When her husband finally returns from his year abroard, she is determined to show him the passion she held back.

Gabriel, Earl of Averford, is determined to earn back his wife’s affection. After spending a year on the continent learning ways to show his love for Sophia, he returns and sets out to seduce his wife and win back her love. Even though he witnessed a kiss between his wife and another man, he knows Sophia would never have given into the kiss if he had not neglected her.

Will Sophia and Gabriel be able to mend their differences and find true passion in their marriage, or will the past separate them forever?

The Great Estate is a continuation of the family saga of a dynastic family. Even though this is the third book in the series, I did not feel as if I had missed anything by not reading the other books first. However, after reading this entertaining book, I do plan to read the other two books.

This is a lovely love story between a couple who married without truly knowing one another. Sophia’s character had been incredibly young and naïve and had listened to the strict advice of her mother regarding relations with her husband, much to her detriment. It is only after she spends a year looking back that she is able to move past that and embrace the passion she feels for Gabriel. Sophia is now an independent woman who has managed her husband’s estate during his absence and has even made it more profitable. She has at last matured into the woman she wants to be. I felt her remorse over her actions and her determination to prove herself to her husband. I liked her character quite a lot.

I fell in love with Gabriel’s character right away, although, I am not so sure a man of this age would have been as forgiving and accepting of his wife’s indiscretion. However his wiilingness to see his culpability is refreshing and made for an interesting read. I loved his determination to become a better man. I could feel the love he has for Sophia on every page. He had me completely vested in his quest from the very beginning.

While I enjoyed the various sub-plots, I’m not sure they truly moved the story forward. They at times took away from the central focus of the book. Nonetheless, The Great Estate is a beautifully written story, and I enjoyed it. I recommend this book for it has a real sense of the time period, a time that will face revolutionary changes during the Great War. It is a time that will change forever the way the aristocracy will live their lives. Happy reading!

Excerpt:

A short time later, Sophia glided down the stairs refreshed and feeling pretty. Jenks had worked her usual magic in pinning her hair at her nape, with soft strands falling to frame her face in perfectly planned “escape” from her diamond comb. The beading of her gown picked up the low light, shimmering as she crossed the drawing room.
“Champagne?” Her breath caught at sight of her handsome husband awaiting her, two glasses in hand. She hadn’t exactly forgotten how well he filled out a tuxedo, but she couldn’t help but feel the fresh tingles running through her blood like bubbles in the champagne when she looked him over. Golden blond hair just brushing the top of his dark collar, tanned skin. He’d spent a lot of time outdoors in Italy, apparently. His shoulders were broad enough to carry the weight of the world or at least, all of Thornbrook Park.
“It’s appropriate for tonight.” He handed her a glass and held her gaze, his coffee eyes aglow. “A celebration. I’m so happy to be home. Happiest to be with you, my exquisite wife.”
She clinked her glass to his. “To your return. I’d almost forgotten how suited you are to dressing up, for a man who prefers the out of doors.”
His full lips parted in a smile, bringing out the single dimple in his left cheek. “I’ve a new interest in interiors.”
“Oh? So you won’t be getting up at the break of dawn to go out and kill some poor unsuspecting animal?”
“Some poor unsuspecting animal will be gracing our table tonight, and thank goodness for it. The Italians offer some interesting cuisine, but there’s nothing like a good English roasted haunch.”
“A haunch? You make it sound so appetizing. Not exactly what you learned to cook in Italy, then, I presume.”
“I learned to make gnocchi, little Italian potato dumplings, served with sage in a butter sauce. And risotto. I’ve perfected my risotto, or so our cook, Signora Gugino, told me. She was my instructor. Some mornings, I would help her go out and look for mushrooms. She taught me which ones were good for eating, and which to avoid.”
“My husband, the mushroom hunter? Astounding.”
“I can show you. We have a few of the same kind growing in the woods here.”
“I would like that.” She took a long sip of champagne.
