Vikki’s Musings

Lucky’s Lady is the last book in the Caversham Chronicles. I have thoroughly enjoyed this interesting series. While Lucky’s Lady is not my favorite, it is an excellent conclusion to this wonderful series.

Sandy Raven writes emotionally-charged romances with intricate plots and unforgettable characters. Lucky’s Lady has both these ingredients. This book is fast-paced and flows beautifully with an excellent balance between dialogue and narrative. For such a long book, it did not have any parts that slowed the story.

While I struggled a bit with some of the choices Mary-Michael makes throughout the book, I like her character a great deal. She is intelligent and hard-working and although she does not have a complete marriage with her elderly husband, she does have deep affection for him. She has a constant war between doing what her husband suggests and her growing attraction for Lucky.  I could feel her anguish and guilt over, first her infidelity and second over the deception with her lover.

Although Lucky makes a dashing and handsome hero and has a wealth of charm, I did have a great deal of trouble with his morals. He thinks it’s perfectly all right to engage in adultery with a married woman. There is something about his character, though, that had me loving the rascal any way. He does recognize that what is between him and Mary-Michael is much more than physical and when he realizes he is in love with her, he is willing to do whatever is necessary to keep her safe.

The attraction between Lucky and Mary-Michael is combustible from their first meeting and only grows stronger as the story progresses. Ms. Raven’s love scenes are sensual and filled with emotion, and I enjoyed them a lot.

I listened to the audio recording performed by Dennis Kleinman and Victoria J. Mayers. This was an unusual narration. Mr. Kleinman read all the narrative for Lucky and all that character’s dialogue. Ms. Mayers did the same for Mary-Michael’s character as well. While this kept the problem of the male sounding too female and vise versa for the female, I found this took some time to get used to, and at times the dialogue sounded abrupt. Nonetheless, both narrators read with the right amount of emotion. I would listen to both narrators in the future.

If you enjoy complex characters with good depth and a unique plot, then you will love Lucky’s Lady as much as I did.  While this is a standalone novel, I do recommend reading the rest of the books in order. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

When I received a request from Ms. Michaels to read La Vie en Rose in exchange for an honest review, at first, I was not sure it would be a book I would enjoy since women’s fiction is not my first choice, but am I thrilled I accepted. This book resonated with me on a deeper level than I usually experience. I truly believe this is a story that all women need to read.

The book is fast-paced and enthralling. This story is much more than a romance, even though, love is the central theme of this book. It’s much more a story of friendship, loyalty, and true affection. Not just between Emma and Riley, but between a brother and sister and true friendship between Emma and Riley’s sister, Rarity. It’s a story of triumphing over extreme adversity and coming out an even stronger person than Emma was before her horrifying, life-threatening experience.

I’m being vague on purpose because I do not want to give anything away. La Vie en Rose is a book you will not want to miss, and you need to have the full benefit of the twists and turns of this amazing book.

Emma starts out as a bit of an air-head, even somewhat shallow, but when she is faced with a devastating situation, she finds out that she is made of steel under all her girlish ways. She’s a character that will have you laughing so hard, tears will roll down your face, but then when the unimaginable happens, she will have you crying just hard. I felt the full gambit of emotions with this unforgettable character.

Riley Lockhart has it all. He’s hilarious, endearing, loyal and determined. His character is a true delight. When he is faced with Emma’s situation, he swiftly changes gears and gives Emma all the support and love she needs to get through her ordeal. Riley loves Emma the way every woman wants to be loved!

I am truly grateful I had a chance to read this incredible book. If you enjoy a story with deep emotion that will pull at your heartstrings, yet one that has too many humorous moments to count, along with a multitude of issues presented with supreme tact and compassion, then you will absolutely want to read this book. If I could give it more than 5 Gold Crowns I would give it 10! This story may very well be the best book I read this year. It is definitely one I will read again and again. Happy reading!

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Dark. Powerful. Dangerous.

Philip Murphy has all of Chicago under his thumb. Except me.

We met in a perfect storm of violence and lust. He saved me and then disappeared from my life. Now I pretend I never knew that kind of darkness. I focus on midterms and campus parties, as if they can wipe the slate clean.

Then he turns up outside my dorm room--wounded and barely conscious. He's the head of a criminal empire, a powerful man, but he needs me now. There are traitors in his midst.

I can help him, but I can't fall for him.

Not again.

Excerpt:

“Come on then. One free punch. I won’t stop you.”

Without meaning to, I moved my body to face him—as if I was really going to do it. As if I was really going to punch him. I wasn’t going to, though…was I? I wasn’t even sure. This felt so topsy-turvy, as if I was in a room full of fun-house mirrors again—or I had never left. I looked like myself but different too. Both scary and afraid.

“I’ll do it,” I threatened, holding up my fist. But I was mostly stalling for time. I didn’t think I could hit him. I wasn’t sure it would even hurt him if I did.

“Go ahead.” He glanced out the window beside me. “We’re almost there. The offer expires in three…two…”

The truth was he deserved worse than a punch for ruining my life. It wasn’t the classes I would miss most or the date with Sloan. It was the chance at a normal life. A chance to have a family. There were strands I’d been braiding my whole life, and he had come along to cut them.

Of course I wasn’t sure I could actually punch him, even if he deserved it. Not without him physically threatening me. Back then, when those men had come for me, I’d fought them. I’d even hit Shelly, pumped up on adrenaline and terror.

If someone was attacking me, I would have fought back. But hitting someone who was just sitting there? Hitting Philip? I couldn’t, no matter how much he deserved it.

“Hit me first,” I told him.

That startled a laugh out of him. “What?”

“Come at me. You start to hit me, then I’ll do it.”

“I’m not going to hit you, kitten.”

“Well, I can’t hit you any other way.”

He sighed. “You know this is ridiculous, right?”

“How is it ridiculous?” To my underwater brain, this made the most sense of anything. “You know you deserve it. And if I were more…you know, bloodthirsty…I would have already done it. This is just…just enabling me.”

One second he was sitting there regarding me with bemusement. The next he launched himself across the seat, his large body moving with surprising grace. I hadn’t taken into account how fast he could move. Of course he’d been strong. He could have overpowered me in a second. But he also moved like a goddamn panther, wrapping his hands around my wrists before I could blink. I didn’t even have time to pull my arm back, much less punch.

Instead he had my hands pressed against the side of the car, his body looming over mine, his hips between mine. His face was only inches away from me, gaze trained on my mouth.

“Like this?” he asked softly.

“Not fair.” My voice was breathless. A spark of heat between my legs reminded me that while my brain might have been mad at him and my heart might have felt conflicted, my body was one hundred percent on his team.

“Oh, I think it was completely fair. You wanted me to come at you. And that’s what I did. So hit me.”

I yanked my wrists, but he held strong. His eyes flared with arousal at watching me struggle. Oh God. I couldn’t deny I felt it too, the clench of delicious surrender. He was holding me down, and I loved it.

“Let go of me.”

“No, kitten. I’m just doing what you asked.” His lips brushed a millimeter from mine. “Enabling you.” The warmth of his breath was the only warning before he kissed me, fever-hot lips pressed against mine, his arms like iron bars around me. I melted into the seat, into the car—and against his body in the places we touched. My hips rocked against his, and he groaned into my mouth.

He lifted his head but left his body around me, an erotic cage. I blinked slowly, disoriented.

Only then did I realize the car had stopped moving.

“One,” he said softly, his eyes almost sympathetic. “Time’s up.”
