Book Description:

Sabina is a young noblewoman who, based on her soothsayer aunt's prediction, believes her words are dangerous and will hurt those she loves. Following the death of her beloved husband, she takes a vow of silence to protect others from suffering the same fate. Ignored and scorned by those around her, who believe her to be cursed by the gods who took her voice, she is content to live in the shadow of her former life, avoiding society as best she can and staying away from the politics and drama of Rome's inner circles.

Lucius is an unwilling front-runner to inherit the title of Emperor from Rome's childless leader, Trajan. Although the soothsayer warns him to steer clear of a pretty face that hides a cursed soul, Lucius cannot help but be drawn to the silent and beautiful Sabina. After learning her secret, he is as determined to help her shed her cloak of silence as she is to keep him at a safe distance. But when Lucius becomes the target of a political plot, Sabina must decide whether breaking her silence will save his life or merely seal his fate.

Admonition was winner of the Georgia Romance Writers' 2020 Maggie Award for Excellence in the Unpublished Historical Romance category.

Excerpt:

They walked along the path in silence toward the spot where her stepsister and Cyprian were standing, and she pushed her inappropriate thoughts of skin and warmth aside. She was in control, she told herself, the rhythmic sound of their sandals against the stone path reflecting her rigorous command of the situation. She raised her head a little higher and moved her shoulders back. He was to her like any other man; she was not a captive to his charms. Indeed, she had rejected his advances just the night before. Hadn’t she?

She observed that he, too, seemed unaffected by her presence at his side. It was not how she imagined he would be, and she found his behavior a little confusing. Perhaps she had misinterpreted the previous night’s incident with the rose. Perhaps he had meant nothing by it and held no grudge against her.

Glancing up at him, she noticed he wore a content half-smile on his lips. He was enjoying the feel of the fragrant evening breeze, no doubt.

They stopped near a small marble fountain several paces from where Cyprian and her stepsister still stood side-by-side. She could not hear the entirety of their conversation over the gentle splashing of the fountain, but every now and then she heard Priscilla’s girlish giggling, generally accompanied by nonsensical and high-pitched exclamations.

“Shall we stay here and give the two of them a moment, while of course strictly supervising their behavior from the shadow of the fountain?”

Sabina nodded her head in agreement. She could be at her stepsister’s side in a few seconds, should she see any action taken that would compromise her honor.

“Good. I appreciate the opportunity to have you to myself for a short time, as I would like to apologize for my behavior last night.”

She furrowed her brow in question as she tried to steady her breathing, which had become quick and shallow upon hearing him mention their encounter from the previous evening. She had just convinced herself that Lucius did not even remember her rejection of his flower. But here, he now wished to discuss it? And what reason could he possibly have for apologizing? He had merely presented her with a lovely flower to smell and perhaps place in her hair or in the folds of her dress. It was no more than any respectable young man would do as a gesture of thanks to a woman in his company. It was she who had been rude in refusing the innocent token. If an apology were warranted, it should have been from her.

She let go of his arm and shook her head, trying to convey that no apology was needed, but he only responded by taking a step closer to her.

“Pray, let me speak, for this weighs heavily on my conscience.”

With his face drawing slowly nearer to hers, she gave up all efforts of hiding her erratic breathing as she moved to step away from him. He caught one of her hands in his and reached up to trace the curve of her cheek with the fingers of his other hand.

“I was wrong last night, you see,” he began, his voice a low rumble, “for I thought you might enjoy a rose plucked from the governor’s bushes.”

His fingertips made their way down her cheek and onto her neck, then moved back to rest behind her head, his thumb making small circles near her jaw.

Unable to move under his touch, she closed her eyes and swallowed hard, then forced her eyes to reopen.

When he spoke again, his voice was even softer, and she strained to hear him over the sound of the fountain, unwittingly moving her face even closer to his. “I was such a fool. I now realize that what you wanted from me was not a flower at all . . .”

His mouth hovered over hers, and she wondered in a half-dazed state how it was that they could be so close and not touch.

“Rather,” he continued in barely a whisper, “what you truly desired was a kiss.”

Her heart stopped beating in her chest, and she closed her eyes. She could feel him there, so close, the warmth of his breath on her face, the heat that radiated from his skin warming hers. Her lips parted in a silent prayer that he would kiss her and end the torturous nearness.

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks goes the author for the complimentary digital copy of Admonition. An intriguing historical romance set in ancient times. I voluntarily agreed to read and review this book prior to publication. I apologize to the author for missing her publication date! My opinions are my own and nothing has influenced my rating.

Admonition is a well-written, emotionally charged romance with a plot that kept me reading, wanting to know what would happen next. There’s no doubt Ms. Amurra has done her research for this historical period and done it well.

Sabina is the heroine in this tale. She’s a young widow and her community believes she is cursed. She lives in a world of silence while she mourns her late husband. I enjoyed her character a great deal and my heart ached for her. She’s consumed by fear that if she loves again, a new husband could perish because of the curse.

Lucius is an incredible hero, and I quickly became vested in his character. He has the traits I most admire in a hero, and I loved his patience with Sabina. He never becomes frustrated with her, even when her fears could drive them apart. Near the end of the book, I could feel his heart ache over the betrayal he experiences. Since I don’t want to have any spoilers, you will need to read the book to understand my meaning!

The romance between Sabina and Lucius starts as simmering pot but slowly comes to a roaring boil by the end. The emotions between them is splendidly written. I truly wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy historical novels set in ancient times with remarkable characters and an emotionally charged plot, then you will love Admonition as much as I did. This is the second book I’ve read by Ms. Amurra and both are wonderful. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the author for sending me a complimentary copy of A Gift for Christmas by Julia Cassandra. I have voluntarily agreed to read and review this novel. My opinions are my own, and no one has influenced them.

A Gift for Christmas is a lovely Christmas tale with endearing characters, and a heartwarming plot with plenty of emotion. This novel deals with several issues that were not viewed in a favorable light during the Regency period. Ms. Cassandra handles these issues with a great deal of sensitivity. Her novel also has an excellent sense of the Regency period.

Cora Jameson is the heroine, and I quickly became enmeshed with her character. Her determination to give her daughter the best life possible is admirable. When she meets the hero, she is overcome with several emotions, and my heart went out to her.

Simon Bristley, Lord Craven is the hero, and I enjoyed his character a great deal. He comes across as an honorable man, and he’s suffered from memory loss, PTSD and a variety of other maladies pertaining to his war experiences. My heart ached for him when he discovers the betrayal of his father.

The romance between Simon and Cora is lovely, and filled with a great deal of emotion. Both characters are confused and hurt because they don’t have all the facts. The chemistry between them is strong and the passion only grows stronger as the story progresses. I truly wanted them to find their way to each other.

If you enjoy Christmas romances with characters that will touch your heart, especially Cora’s daughter, then you will love A Gift for Christmas as much as I did. Ms. Cassandra has a great deal of talent, and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the complimentary copy of For Better For Worse by June Francis for the purpose of reading and reviewing prior to publication. My opinions are my own, and no one has influenced them.

For Better For Worse is an intriguing historical fiction novel with complex characters and an involved plot. The pacing kept me engaged from the beginning until the end. Ms. Francis must do extensive research because the detail and authentic feel to the setting is amazing.

Grace’s character has a great many facets. She is under twenty in the beginning and a mature woman by the end. During this saga, she experiences life  in pre-WWII and in the midst of WWII, all the way to the aftermath. There are complex family relationships, starting with her cousin, Dougie. Then later ones with his oblivious mother, one contentious sister and another one who attempts to bridge the rift between them. I liked Grace’s character and enjoyed following her character growth and great love for her children.

This was not the easiest review to write without including spoilers. The book description does not give the reader a true picture of this novel’s depth. The story is complicated at times, but it intrigued me, and I enjoyed it a great deal.

If you enjoy novels depicting life before, during, and after WWII, then you will love the historical details in For Better For Worse by Ms. Francis, since it includes an excellent example of life during this turbulent period of history. Happy reading!

Author Bio:

Due to the Luftwaffe having bombed the local maternity hospital in Liverpool, I was born in a boarding house in Blackpool in 1941. I was the first daughter after two sons, Ronald and Donald, and in no time at all I was whisked back to Liverpool to join them. My sister Irene was born eighteen months later in our front parlour.

It was not until my dad, Stanley Nelson was demobbed in the spring of 1946 and sat me on his knee and told me stories. Books were a luxury that my parents could not afford and that was why visiting the local library was a twice weekly event for me. One of my biggest regrets is that Dad died before my first book was published.

I passed the eleven + and attended Liverpool Girls’ College. I left at sixteen with 2 O levels in English Lit and History. I was later to gain English Language and Geography as an adult. I believed it an impossible dream for a working class girl like me to be a writer, so I became a cash clerk for Littlewoods and it was there I learnt to type.

I met my husband John in the local picture house when I was sixteen. We married six years later in a double ceremony with my sister and her fiancé when I was twenty-two. We moved to the outskirts of Liverpool and I became a stay-at-home Mum with three sons. During which time I started a playgroup in my local church hall which I ran for ten years. It was not until the boys were at school that I decided to have a go at fulfilling my dream of being a writer. Due to a vicar’s wife who did some writing, I became the editor of the church magazine and just as importantly she introduced me to Crosby Writers’ Group. I had my own typewriter, an old Underwood, circa 1930s and a supply of scrap paper, provided by my printer husband I set about the tough task of learning to write for publication.

I never looked back, although it took me a year or so to have my first article accepted by MY WEEKLY magazine. Despite having numerous articles published and some short stories on Radio Merseyside, my heart was in the novel. Due to a published writer friend, I was encouraged to finish a medieval historical romance which after two years of rewriting was accepted by Mills & Boon.

But I wanted to write a story set in my own city of Liverpool. It took me two years and a lot of research. During that time I gained an agent, a word processor and eventually another publisher.

I have had twenty-two sagas published, as well as thirteen historical romances. Apart from writing, I enjoy swimming, reading, doing jigsaws, films, walking, chattering with friends and family and tracing my ancestry. I still live on Merseyside.

Vikki’s Musings

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the complimentary copy of An Amish Husband for Tillie by Amy Lillard for the purpose of reading and reviewing prior to publication. My opinions are my own and no one has influenced them.

An Amish Husband for Tillie is a lovely Amish novel with engaging character and a fulfilling plot. The pacing kept me enmeshed in the story from the first page to the last. The setting is not common for Amish fictions since it’s set in  Pontotoc, Mississippi. While I question the harsh severity of the bishop’s attitude, I’m confident other Amish communities can have different ways to handle the heroine’s situation.

Tillie Gingerich’s character is deeply troubled and confused when she returns to her family after living in the Englisch world with her boyfriend. She wants her unborn baby to be raised Amish, and her boyfriend refuses to return to the small Amish community they are from, so she comes back on her own. I could feel her fear for her child and the rejection of the extremely strict bishop. Her bewilderment of what she must do. Her choice is leave on her own or return to her boyfriend which isn’t what she wants for her child.

Levi Yoder is the hero, and he lost his beloved wife and unborn child a few months before. He dreads the Christmas season because he and his late wife imagined her having their babe on the blessed day. Seeing Tillie just adds to his misery. He tries to avoid the town, his family, and the pregnant Tillie, but his sister is determined to pull him kicking and screaming to the celebrations. His depression and need to isolate is understandable after suffering such a devastating loss.

When the very pregnant Tillie ends up in Levi’s barn during a violent snowstorm, that when Tillie and Levi’s romance begins. It’s sweet and believable because of the situation the couple are in. I truly wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you enjoy Amish fiction with characters and a plot that will touch your heart, then you will love An Amish Husband for Tillie as much as I did. I have enjoyed this heartwarming series. Happy reading!

Author Bio:

I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.

I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son-a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!

I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels-not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.

I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I love to write inspirational romances. The two go hand-in-hand for me.

I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.

I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I'll get to it or I won't, either way I'm good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I'm alone on this last one, and again, I'm good with it.)

Favorite movies-(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940′s movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven't seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn's and Audrey's.
