He’s falling for his brother’s ex—as if he needs another reason to go.

Nate Wilde is ready to leave Birch Bay. He’s been home too long as it is and extending his visit means risking fantasies of staying for good. Wants and desires never work out for him, though. With good comes bad, and he’s had enough bad to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, his siblings need him. The family orchard is on the brink of collapse, and they’re relying on him to help. Only . . . what can he possibly do to save an orchard that’s lost most of its trees?

Megan Manning, ex-girlfriend to Nate’s youngest brother and manager of the Wilde family’s cherry-themed gift store, intends to settle permanently in her newly adopted town. Her own family has always cared more about traveling the world than creating a place to call home, so she’s going to make that for herself. Her list for happiness is simple. A rewarding job, good friends, and finding someone to love. She doesn’t want the kind of love she grew up with, however. She wants someone willing to stick.

As Nate works to save the orchard, Megan pitches in to help. After all, no cherry farm equals no need for a cherry-themed gift store. But when constant contact has their chemistry spiking, Megan discovers there’s more than the family business worth fighting for. Only, will Nate be able to handle falling for his brother’s ex? Or will he walk . . . exactly as her family always has?

Vikki’s Musings

Montana Promises is the fifth full length novel in Kim Law’s fantastic series, The Wildes of Birch Bay  and an excellent addition. When I received an invitation from the author, I eagerly agreed to read and review. However, through a fluke, I did not receive the ARC in advance of publication, so since I subscribe to KU, I downloaded this book and read it via KU. My opinions are my own and not influenced in any way.

Montana Promises grabbed me early on. Megan played a significant role in Montana Dreams when she broke off her relationship with Jaden. When I realized she would be the heroine in this book, and that Nate would be the hero, it piqued my interest immediately. Their relationship had the potential to create major issues among the Wilde clan. How would Jaden act when he discovers they were dating? How would the rest of the family react? I eagerly delved in and read this book in less than a day, finding it hard to put down when life interfered.

The story is compelling, and the pacing is excellent. Ms. Law certainly knows how to pull her readers in and keep them to the end. Both characters have amazing depth and many layers. Both crave love. Megan believes she will never find anyone who will put her first. Nate’s baggage has him believing he will never find anyone to love and call his own or someone who will love him despite his flaws. This adds a multitude of layers to their characters and the plot.

Megan’s character is determined to pursue a career in retailing, although her degrees were in computer programing. She’s also fallen in love with Birch Bay and wants to live there going forward. Her relationship with her family, especially her father, has fueled her belief that no one will ever put her first. She loves lists and has one regarding the desired man in her life. She desperately wants to find a husband and start a family.

Nate’s character is complex. He’s riddled with guilt and blames himself for his father’s accident which caused him to lose his leg. He should have stopped his dad from driving the tractor. Then, his relationship with his narcistic late mother, influences his belief regarding his inability to find and give love.

What starts as a flirty friendship between Megan and Nate, quickly ignites for both of them. While Nate clearly wants Megan, initially, he feels it would be impossible since Megan was practically engaged to his brother. Even though Jaden has moved on and found love, a brother doesn’t enter a relationship with the woman who was a former lover of one of his siblings.

Megan is not looking for a superficial relationship. She wants a husband, and Nate has never indicated he was interested in a wife. He’s the Wilde brother who slips in and out of Birch Bay, never staying longer than a few days or perhaps a week. Between his father’s accident and the loss of 85% of the family’s cherry orchard, he’s stuck overseeing the removal of the dead trees and the nurturing of the 15% that is left while his father recovers.

When the family decide to turn the ruined part of the orchard into a rustic retreat, Megan agrees to design the interiors of the cabins Nate is building. This has the couple working together, and their attraction builds to such a fierce intensity, it can no longer be ignored. This creates a combustible situation that makes for fascinating reading!

Montana Promises is not only an intriguing romance, it brings out more, regarding the twisted mechanizations of the late mother and how she influenced the choices all her children have made. This entire series has moved me greatly. To fully understand this dysfunctional family saga, I do recommend reading the other books, even though Montana Promises can be read as a stand-alone. There’s only one Wilde sibling who is still unattached, and I can’t wait to read Cord’s story, which will be the last book. Happy reading!
