Excerpt:
The innkeeper looked up when Lizabella Millington entered the common room. “Did ye sleep well? Ye must of been exhausted. Ye’ve slept past noon. Would ye like somethin’ t’ eat?”
Lizabella nodded enthusiastically. “Oh, thank you, sir. That’s very kind of you. Could someone give me a ride to Viscount Loring’s estate? I would much appreciate it.”
“Why do ye want to go there?” he asked. “He’s in mourning for his brother and–”
Her head whirled, and she started shaking all over.
She swayed.
The innkeeper lunged forward and kept her from falling. “Here, let me help ye sit. Ye look like yer goin’ t’ pass out.”
She held on to his hand as she sat at the table.
Oh, why…why?
How will I live without him?
Oh, my poor baby.
Steeling her resolve, she asked, “What happened to Lieutenant Dawson? He was stationed near my home. How did he…die?”
“Shot in the gut during the last battle against Bonaparte,” he shook his head, “and he come home to his brother’s house. From what some of th’ servants told me, he was out of his head for weeks. He lingered for a fortnight, but never awoke. He died ’bout th’ first week of August. His lordship’s been terrible upset. Been keepin’ to hisself ever since. Do ye still want to go?”
The man glanced at her protruding stomach with wary eyes. She fisted her hands to keep them from trembling. She’d already raised his suspicions enough by almost fainting. “Yes…yes, I do…I need to go. Can you please help me get there?”
Although she needed to eat for the babe’s sake, she found it too difficult to swallow and pushed the food away. The man shrugged. “Come on. I’ll take ye."
