Vikki’s Musings
I always love books with babies and children as part
of the story line. When I found Baby For Keeps, I immediately
downloaded it since I have enjoyed other books by Janice Maynard. This was
definitely an enjoyable read.
Dylan Kavangh sees a young woman downing one drink
after another and becomes concerned. He does not want that in his bar. When he
talks to his bartender, he finds out the drinks are virgin strawberry
daiquiris. Curious, he approaches the woman and sees a baby in her lap and tears
rolling down the woman’s face. Then he realizes it is none other than Mia
Larin.
Mia Larin has a new baby, no job and an empty bank
account, having depleted all her reserves after eight bouts of artificial
insemination, using a sperm donor. When she sees Dylan, a guy she tutored back
in high school, she is immediately drawn to him. While he had been a jock and
she a geek, they had become friends during the tutoring sessions. She’d had a
crush on him all those years ago, and the attraction was still there.
When Dylan hears her story, he offers her a temporary
job as his bookkeeper and the apartment above his bar, the Silver Dollar Saloon.
Mia wants to think about it, so he leaves her at a local motel out on the
interstate to give her a chance to sleep on it.
Once Mia is in the motel room and gets her daughter,
Cora, asleep, she makes the decision to accept Dylan’s offer. After all, it
will give her a chance to regroup and send out her resume to perspective
employers—and if she is brave enough—a chance to seduce the gorgeous Dylan
Kavanagh. Not that she had ever tried to seduce a man before.
After a fire destroys the apartment over the bar,
Dylan convinces her to move in with him, temporarily. Was there a better
opportunity to achieve her desire, than daily contact with Dylan? Should she
try it, or keep her attraction locked up tight and become the little Mia from
high school who would not have said boo to a goose?
I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced second chance romance.
I like Ms. Maynard’s flowing writing style and interesting characters. While
this is a light-hearted read without a great deal of conflict, it has such a
sweet and tender love story that it satisfied my romantic heart. I liked both
characters immediately and fell in love with the sweet baby, Cora.
The only reason I did not give Baby For Keeps 5 Gold Crowns
was because I would have liked a bit more development of the plot point,
concerning Dylan’s learning disability from high school. This is an engaging
read that had me flipping the pages on my Kindle to see how this couple with
such differing goals would find their HEA. I recommend this delightful book,
and I am sure you will enjoy Dylan and Mia’s love story as much as I did. Happy
reading!
