Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the complimentary copy of The Lyon Sleeps Tonight by Elizabeth Ellen Carter for the purpose of reading and reviewing it. My opinions are my own, and no one has influenced them.

The Lyon Sleeps Tonight is a Regency romance with engaging characters and a unique plot. I enjoy stories that show the main characters as children, so this novella pulled me in right away. However, it didn’t keep me until the end. In part, because there aren’t that many scenes between the heroine and hero in the middle, so it has a sagging middle.

Opal Jones is the heroine, and while I liked her, I didn’t fall in love with her. As an adult, her character didn’t show much growth, even for a novella. I only got to know her determination to get the hero to marry her. I didn’t see much depth to her. I did a few glimpses of the fire, but just not enough to inflame my opinions of her.

Peter Ravenshaw’s character was much more interesting and had more depth. His suffering and pain emotionally and physically are strong throughout all his scenes. I enjoyed him as a hero and wanted him to find a happy ending.

The author bases romance between the hero and heroine on a childhood friendship that the heroine sees through her child’s eye. As adults, they have very little contact, so I found it difficult to believe in their love story.

If you enjoy Regency romance set in the brilliancy of London ballrooms and gaming hells, then you may like The Lyon Sleeps Tonight. I have read several other books in this series and found them more intriguing. This tie into the series seems unnecessary to me. While I didn’t love this book, other reviewers did, so with all reviews, my opinions are subjective. Happy reading!

Book Review with featured author: Montana Homecoming by Kim Law

Montana Homecoming by Kim Law

Publisher & Release: J-Ko Publishing, July 9, 2020

Time and setting:  Present Day, Birch Bay, WA

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Length: 293 Pages

Rating: 5 Gold Crowns

Book Description:

With four Wilde babies already due in the coming weeks, the last thing Cord expects when he returns home is to discover one more is on the way . . . his.

His hometown of Birch Bay isn’t the respite Cord Wilde envisions when forced to take a mandatory vacation. Instead, he finds that thanks to one memorable weekend back in the spring, he now faces the same situation as his siblings, expecting a “bundle of joy.” But accidental pregnancy or not, that doesn’t mean Cord has to be a hands-on dad. He can uphold his responsibilities without upending his life. Plus, his narcissistic mother once taught him a very valuable lesson: never get mixed up with a woman who can take control of your emotions. And no one has ever threatened his legendary control quite like Maggie.

Sweet and sassy schoolteacher Maggie Crowder has made one big oops in her life, but she isn’t letting that bring her down. She just has to show hunky long-time crush Cord Wilde that their weekend together was more than a good time and an unexpected pregnancy. After all, she couldn’t be the only one who’d felt a connection, right? Only, Cord has a pretty big wall around his heart, and he isn’t letting anyone through. Will the lure of unconditional love, as well as the draw of finally returning home to Birch Bay, be enough to break through his last ounce of resistance?

Return to Wilde Orchard one final time and fall in love with the Wilde family all over again.

Thanks goes to the author for the complimentary copy of Montana Homecoming by Kim Law for the purpose of reading and reviewing prior to publication. My opinions are my own and no one has influenced them.

Montana Homecoming is the final book in Ms. Law’s The Wildes of Birch Bay, and captured me from the first page to the last. It’s an amazing book and touched me on a deeper level than any in this series since Dani’s story in the first book, Montana Cherries

Maggie Crowder’s character appealed to me from her first appearance. She has quite a bit in her cup, including a huge secret that she needs to share and can put off no longer. She wants to have everything resolved before the birth of her unexpected surprise from a weekend encounter with the guy she’d crushed on for years. I loved her determination to move forward and do what is best for her child.

Cord Wilde is a truly tortured hero, my favorite kind! He grew up with a narcissistic mother who counted on him to “save” her, but as a sixteen-year-old, he believes he failed her. He refuses to ever let any woman control his emotions again. His reason for returning to Birch Bay is tormenting him, and when he learns his carefree weekend with Maggie had consequences, he’s willing to accept financial responsible, but that doesn’t mean he needs to be in the child’s life once he’s born.

If I hadn’t met Cord in the previous books, I might not have liked his character in the beginning, but since I had and knew part of his story, I understood his fears, so my heart ached for him. He fights the feelings he has for Maggie, and I could feel his confusion when guilt eats at him over his decision to stay away from her and any thought of being a hands-on father.

The romance between Maggie and Cord begins with them on opposite sides, but as they spend time with each other, the undeniable attraction cannot be ignored. Cord’s struggle to move beyond his fears makes their love story an emotional one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I really wanted them to find their way to lasting happiness. They both deserved the security of knowing they are loved unconditionally.

If you enjoy contemporary romance with plenty of deep emotions and compelling characters, then you will love Montana Homecoming as much as I did. While this can be read as a stand-alone novel, I highly recommend reading at least the first book in this series. This has been an amazing series and I loved spending time with the Wilde family and enchanting Birch Bay. Happy reading!

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the chance to read and review The Amish Teacher’s Dilemma by Patricia Davids. My opinions are my own and are not influenced by a gift of an e-copy of this book.

The Amish Teacher’s Dilemma is a lovely Amish tale with an endearing heroine who is humble and modest. She’s given up on finding a husband and takes a teaching job in a new community. A friendship develops between her and her nextdoor neighbor. Could she hope something more can be in store for her?

Eva Coblentz is a delightful character with all the characteristics I love in an Amish Heroine. Her heart is as big as an ocean when it comes to the orphaned children living with their elder brother. She cares for them as if they were her own kinner.

Willis Gingrich is a charming hero. He’s ashamed and embarrassed by his inability to learn as others who find it so easy. He feels overwhelmed raising his three half-siblings. My heart hurt for him when he realizes his feelings for Eva are growing. He believes he is too far away from her on an intellectual level for her to ever return his regard.

The romance between Eva and Willis is sweet and based on their growing friendship. They quickly become best friends. I loved their nightly meetings in the schoolyard. I truly wanted this charming couple to find a way to each other.

If you enjoy a heartfelt romance with engaging characters and a lovely plot that, at times, will have you smiling, while at others, dotting tears from the corner of your eyes, then you will love The Amish Teacher’s Dilemma as much as I did. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I’ve already purchased the first two books in this series and read them! I understand Ms. Davids has plans to write quite a few more books in this heartwarming series. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

This is the first book I’ve read by Skye McNeil, and I enjoyed it. Thanks goes the publisher, via Net Galley, for the opportunity to read and review. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.

I loved, loved Brittany and Bailey. They are so adorable and made the book so much fun to read. The dialogue is sparkling and natural. The premise is unique. Now, the pacing is a bit slow in the middle of the book and the story went on too long, but not so much that it took away from my overall enjoyment.

Londyn Bellerose’s character is endearing. Her growing love for Callum’s daughters is amazing and touched my heart. Londyn is a loyal friend and has a child-like side to her personality that is very appealing.

Callum is an engaging hero. He has a huge reason to mistrust women after what happened with his children’s mother. Most men would be hesitant to enter into a relationship with a woman who in some ways reminds him of Jessica. His character is a bit stiff at times, but not so much that it kept me from liking him.

Now, the romance between them has many lovely moments, but Ms. McNeil dragged out the physical attraction way too much, making the story much longer than it needed to be. Unfortunately, that did color my opinion a bit. Overall though, the chemistry between the hero and heroine is good, and the book has a satisfying and very romantic ending.

If you enjoy light-hearted romances with adorable children, and can overlook the sagging middle, then you will like Hearts Abroad. I do look forward to reading the next book in this series. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

This is the third book in the Sons of Broadseries, and I enjoyed Broken Promisea great deal. I had eagerly waited for this conclusion of this series. I received a digital ARC from the publisher, via Net Galley, with the promise to read and review in advance of publication. My opinions are my own and are not influenced by that fact.

Broken Promiseis a fast-paced, exciting read. While it doesn’t meet the traditional criteria for a romance, it definitely does as a thriller. I totally enjoyed the plot and the building of tension. The story pulled me in from the start.

I met Alyssa if the previous books and enjoyed her character quite a lot. In this book, her character becomes fully developed, and I fell in love with her. She is so dedicated to finding “The Gentleman” to the extent she puts her life in jeopardy in a big way.

I also met Kipling in the other books in this series. I really loved his character. He is willing to do whatever it takes to save his half-sister, especially after his actions in the previous book. I could really feel is anguish over his actions and his desire to right his wrongs. Ms. Thomas does a great job of redeeming his character and giving me the reasons behind his previous decisions.

The romance between Alyssa and Kipling is blazing hot and I could really see why they are attracted to each other. The emotions are strong and when they come together it’s amazing. I truly wanted them to find their well-deserved happy ending.

If you enjoy a book with plenty of action and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then you will love Broken Promise as much as I did. You will want to read the other books in this series first to really appreciate the diabolical, evil villain! But never fear, they will definitely be worth your time. The first two books are awesome as well. Happy reading!

Vikki’s Musings

Catherine Bybee is fast becoming one of my auto-buy authors. This is book six in the Not Quite series. When I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, to read and review, I immediately accepted.

As with all of Ms. Bybee’s novels, Not Quite Crazy captured my attention from the first page and kept until the last. The pacing is fast, the characters are entertaining and well-written, and the plot is fantastic.

I found Rachel Price a captivating character. She is smart, caring, and determined. Her willingness to raise her best friend’s son when she died, is admirable, especially when she has to deal with obnoxious parental grandparents. They certainly make her life difficult.

Jason Fairchild is a wonderful hero. He has all the qualities I love. Ms. Bybee gained my support and desire to see him get the girl right away. It’s refreshing to read a book with a CEO who is not a womanizer, just a good guy. He loves his family and put their needs before his own, as he quickly does with Rachel and her step-son Owen.

The romance between Rachel and Jason is strong. The sexual tension between the pair is excellent. I truly wanted them to find their happy ending. They are perfect for each other.

I enjoyed seeing some of the characters from earlier books in this series. It’s always fun to reconnect. Owen is a great character, and I could feel his confusion over his father. He’s a great teenager and very smart.

If you enjoy a romance with strong family ties, engaging characters, and an intriguing plot, then you will love Not Quite Crazy as much as I did. I highly recommend this talented author. While this book is part of a series, it is a stand-alone novel. Happy reading!

Message From the Author

In Not Quite Crazy, California transplant, Rachel Price, doesn’t understand the ramifications of driving into Manhattan from Connecticut every day; in every type of weather…especially snow. When she runs the charming Jason Fairchild off the road, sparks fly. Too bad Jason is her new boss and dating him is out of the question. Everyone knows it’s occupational suicide to date your boss.

Determined to keep her distance romantically, the two dive into a friendship. It isn’t long before those sparks ignite and neither one of them can deny their attraction. Throw in a teenage ward that Rachel has taken on after the death of her best friend, and biological grandparents that seek custody; and this heart warming love story is bound to whisk you away.

While I was writing Not Quite Crazy I took an impromptu trip to Manhattan last March. I purposely chose a winter month where I might be able to absorb what it felt like to be in the city when snow covered the ground. That might sound silly for those of you who live in the city, but for me, a woman who has lived in Southern California since she was eighteen years old, I had no idea just how snow impacts day to day life.

On the drive in from the airport, I was immediately struck by the bikes chained to posts and buried by snow. I observed a man digging his car out and effectively covering his neighbor’s car in the process. The plows did a great job of clearing the path for those cars actually moving, but did an equally fantastic job of making sure some vehicles couldn’t move for days. Trash piled up on the sidewalks would have to wait to be picked up until the thaw. It was astonishing to see. But the best experience for me, and one that made it into the pages of Not Quite Crazy, came when I took my first ride on the subway. You see, I was on my way uptown, from downtown to meet with my agent. Keep in mind, Manhattan is only five miles long. But it was St. Patrick’s Day and I completely forgot about the parade. I ordered an Uber, as one does, and sat bumper to bumper for nearly two hours. After arriving extremely late to my lunch, my wise and savvy agent gave me the instructions I needed to ride the subway back to my downtown hotel. I’m a grown woman, riding a subway shouldn’t intimidate me… but if I were honest, it did. So, with my purse strapped to my shoulder and zipped on the inside of my jacket, and my eyes wide open, I crowded into the underground train along with just about everyone else in the city.  Street performers jumped onto the car and started singing for change. Tourists chatted enthusiastically while locals looked bored with the whole process.

Rachel, my heroine in Not Quite Crazy is an extension of everyone I know that has lived in California. Here on the west coast we all have cars. We’re in them all the time. Public transportation is a joke when the distance between downtown LA and Orange County is so far away. The concept of always relying on public transportation to get to work every single day isn’t something most Southern Californian’s do. So when Rachel showed up on the page, I made sure she personified my own stubbornness about independently driving to and from wherever she needed to go. Even if it takes her two hours more than it should.

I hope you all enjoy this final chapter in the Not Quite Series and find room on your keeper shelf for Not Quite Crazy

Cheers,
Catherine

NOT QUITE CRAZY Excerpt

Rachel found the stack of mail on the dining room table. She fingered through a few bills and tossed the junk to the side to add to the recycle bin. The box Owen had spoken of didn’t have a mailing label. In fact, all that was written on the plain brown box was her name, her first name.

She peeled away the tape, not knowing what to expect. Once she folded the lid back, she saw a handwritten envelope on top of a white canvas bag. It took a little effort to lift the noisy bag from the box—the sound of metal hitting metal struck her as odd.

Chains.

Chains for the tires on her car.

“Who…?”

She opened the note and a second paper fell out.

Rachel

Thank you for braving this stranger in a storm and keeping me from frostbite. Welcome to Connecticut.

Jason

Below his name was a phone number

Something inside her stomach flipped, the buzz a teenage girl feels when she notices a popular boy watching her from the other side of the classroom. Or maybe she was reading into it. Maybe this was just a thank-you, a friendly gesture from a grateful, stranded traveler.

Her cheeks warmed.

Assuming he gave her a mobile number, Rachel decided to send a text.

Hello Jason. I received your gift. They were incredibly thoughtful. Thank you.

She read her note over, twice, then pressed “Send.” Off it went, in wherever notes went as they traveled faster than Superman in cyberspace.

The phone in her hand buzzed, reminding her she was holding it.

Is this Rachel?

She grinned.

Do you leave gifts on everyone’s doorstep in town?

Dot. Dot. Dot. It is nearly Christmas.

Was he flirting? It had been some time since she’d sent a text to anyone outside of the friend zone, so she couldn’t tell.

So you double as Connecticut’s Santa Claus?

Shhh. Don’t tell anyone. It’s a secret.

Well, he wasn’t not flirting.

I’ll keep my mouth closed on one condition.

Oh? What’s that?

I want to meet Vixen. She’s always been my favorite.

I thought Vixen was a he.

She giggled.

A boy named Vixen. That’s just cruel. Good point. I’ll see what I can do. The team is on a strict curfew until after the holiday.

Rachel found a rolling eye emoji.
