After four centuries of political infighting with Linden, the ruler of the Marches, all Mariah wants is a little peace and quiet. Then, privateers attack her daughter's family, leaving Norerah at death's door. Mariah’s anger boils over. Ashton, her ring-mate and Linden’s half-brother, and Mariah seek vengeance, ignoring Linden’s decrees, only to discover a strange magic that threatens everything the three hold dear.

EXCERPT

Linden, the Lord High Commander of the Marches, strode across the main healing hall of the southern district, where Mariah was helping that day. One of the healers had had a family emergency, and the lead healer had called Mariah to replace him. She now stood by the door leading into the private consulting rooms, feeling the heat of his anger. The veins bulged in Linden’s neck as his face reddened when he saw her standing by the interior door. Mariah unhooked her thumbs from her honor belt and crossed her arms over her chest, ready to withstand his tirade, though she did not know what had angered him this time.

Halting in the middle of the room, Linden’s growled words boomed through the waiting room. “Stop interfering in my business, woman.”

The ruler’s head lowered as if he were a bull readying for the change. The people, waiting to consult with the healers, shrank away though both combatants were unarmed except for their boot knives used mostly for eating.

Mariah’s dark eyes blazed. Though she no longer wore her sword and seldom visited his ranger camp, Mariah still dressed in warrior's breeches, unlaced shirt, and knee-high boots, much as he did. Only her honor belt differed, displaying healer's insignia on its interlocking buckles, though the belt itself was embossed with as many death stars as his.

Biting her lip, Mariah longed for Linden’s younger version. The angry, stocky man had swallowed the slim, hesitant youth, who had once shared her bed with his half-brother long years ago. Linden pushed forward until his large nose almost touched hers, bringing his sharp elven teeth close enough to bite. The heat of his anger brushed against her tan skin. Mariah tensed, ready to defend all in the room.

The air in the public area crackled as elven shields snapped into place.

The common Half-Elven patients and their families cowered against the walls. The audience’s eyes rolled like nervous horses, fearing what powers the combatants might unleash. Mariah's skin itched from the static raised as the watchers pulled what energy they could from the air to strengthen their protective shields. But she focused her attention on the ruler who had once been one of her closest friends.

EXCERPT

Ariah stood beneath the immeasurable night sky as she admired the breathtaking view. She lost herself within the constellations, allowing those luxurious diamond strands to coil around her heart. Numberless stars reflected within the Seine’s glassy surface and set the water afire. Breathing deeply, Ariah reached out and folded her hands atop the stone balustrade.
This is where she’d found him. Her heart picked up speed as memories of that fateful night invaded her mind and body. Down below, water lapped against the embankment and infused the atmosphere with a soothing lull. A flashback of Gabriel’s motionless form materialized within the shadows . . . and Ariah’s chest constricted as she relived his every kiss and touch.
Then –
A gentle pressure whispered against her back. Gabriel’s unique aroma filled her spirit while strong arms enfolded her from behind. Somehow, some way, she’d known he’d be here tonight.
She sighed deeply and relaxed within his protective embrace. One hand lost itself in her curls and delicately sifted through the strands; the other applied subtle pressure to the base of her spine in a ghostlike caress. Breathless and at peace, she spiraled into a decadent trance. She drank in each sensation . . . the mesmerizing caress of his fingertips against her scalp, the wind’s crisp breath, the Seine’s haunting lamentations . . .
Gabriel brushed away the swarm of curls, exposing her ear to the night, and breathed against the fine cartilage. This was the moment she’d feared for weeks – the moment of their parting. Then he sang to her – his voice rich, warm, and sultry, and all other thoughts fell away.
“The gentle breath of winter sings,
It cools my brow and furls my wings.
And when the dusk at last descends,
I shall keep my hope, steel my heart, for never will thy love depart.
Now you are come all my grief is gone,
Let us forget those nights that never dawned.”
The rich cadence of his voice seduced her into calmness. Fighting to hold back tears, she rotated in his arms, never once leaving the security of his embrace. Indeed, she’d stay with him until the very end – and they wouldn’t part a moment sooner. She tilted her chin up and met his expressive gaze. The nearby oil lamp shone brightly behind Gabriel, silhouetting his strained features. She directed his body to the side, needing to see his eyes, directing the shadows from his face.
“You remember.”

Gabriel shook his head while a riot of emotions crossed his features. “I shall never forget.”

He has spent his entire adult life trying to outrun his violent past, but the upcoming showdown with the father he hasn’t seen in more than a decade has him spending far more time in the past than in the present. His biggest challenge is convincing his pregnant fiancĂ©e, Laura McCarthy, to sit out the trip. The last thing he wants is to expose the woman he loves to the pain of his past.

Laura is determined to stand by Owen’s side throughout the trial and into the life they have planned together. The trial and her final divorce papers are the only things standing between them and the wedding they have looked forward to all year. Can she convince Owen to let her in and allow her to help him through this difficult time? And what will become of the man she loves if his father walks free?

As Owen and Laura prepare for the emotional battle with his father, his mother, Sarah, finally comes clean about her violent marriage with Charlie Grandchamp, the man who has been her friend and companion for months now. How will Charlie react to hearing Sarah’s secrets, and will their relationship move forward now that he finally knows the truth about why she can’t bear to let him touch her?

Catch up with all your favorite Gansett Island characters from the past ten and a half books and meet several new characters, including some McCarthy cousins on the island for Laura and Owen’s wedding, who will be featured in future books.

Vikki’s Musings

What a delightful series! I am so glad I decided to read the McCarthy’s of Gansett Island books. I am enjoying it tremendously and finding it quite addicting. Gansett After Dark is the continuation of Owen and Laura’s story, which started in Season For Love. I do recommend reading that book first to fully appreciate this one.

Owen and Laura have a big hurdle to get over before their wedding. His father’s trial is fast approaching and Owen is very unsettled by it. Laura is experiencing acute morning sickness that lasts all day and night to the point that she becomes dehydrated and has to spend time at the clinic where Dr. David and Victoria give her fluids so she’ll be able to travel.

Will Owen make it through the trial with Laura by his side so they can at last have their wedding, or will his torment get the best of him?

There’s a lot that happens in Gansett After Dark besides what’s going on with Owen and Laura. I thoroughly enjoyed Dan and Kara’s sub-plot and the way Tiffany tried to intervene at their engagement party was awesome. The cannon that is her ex-husband finally shot off!

There is a shocking turn of events for big Mac and Linda when Mallory Vaughn shows up on their doorstep. I won’t say more because I don’t want to give anything away, but hold onto your seats, Mallory is going to shake all the McCarthys, especially Janey and Mac.

I love following the other characters as they grow in their relationships. Adam and Abby get engaged and of course Abby wants them to get another tattoo. Sarah finally tells Charlie about the abuse she suffered for so many years at the hands of her husband and their friendship turns romantic. Seamus and Carolina throw a surprise wedding, and Brant finally gets Stephanie to set a date for Labor Day.

Again, I thoroughly enjoyed Holly Fielding’s performance. How she keeps all the characters from sounding the same is astonishing. She is the narrator for Kisses After Dark, but I have already downloaded Love After Dark and noticed there is a new narrator. She has some big shoes to follow in estimation!

If you’re looking for a series that will have you laughing one moment and crying another, then you will love the McCarthys of Gansett Island. While you could read these books out of order, I don’t recommend it. Start with Maid For Love, you will not regret it. Happy reading!

Sometimes the best offense is a good rebound...

Adam McCarthy has had a really bad week. In addition to nearly losing his three brothers in a tragic boating accident, his now ex-girlfriend has double-crossed him right out of the successful computer company he founded in New York City. What he needs is a few days at home on Gansett Island to make sure his beloved brothers are safe and to get back in touch with what really matters—his family, his friends and the tiny island that soothes his battered soul. On the ferry ride home, he runs into an old family friend who's had her own share of heartache, and Adam helps her through some rough moments, sparking an unlikely alliance.

Abby Callahan has come home to Gansett, single once again after her relationship with Dr. Cal Maitland blows up in her face. After two epic failures in the game of love, she's decided this is going to be the summer she busts loose and finally has some fun—and she's shaking things up in a big way! The new Abby swears, drinks, gets a tattoo, sleeps around and generally does anything her kinder, gentler alter ego wouldn't have dreamed of doing.

Before too long, Adam has appointed himself her guardian and is determined that the only sleeping around she's doing is with him. That is… unless his brother Grant is willing to risk his newfound happiness with Stephanie to keep Adam from rebounding with his ex. And what happens when Adam and Abby realize their summer fling has taken a serious turn, especially when he gets the chance to return to New York and fight for the company that's rightfully his? Abby has already followed two men off the island. Does she have it in her to find out if the third time really is the charm?

Another wild summer on Gansett Island is under way, complete with new stories for many of your favorite couples from past books! You'll also see more of Dan and Kara, David and Daisy, and find out whether Carolina has made peace with her relationship with the much younger and very sexy Irishman, Seamus O'Grady. Ready? Set? Let's go back to Gansett Island!

Vikki’s Musings

What a delightful series! I am so glad I decided to read the McCarthy’s of Gansett Island books. I am enjoying it tremendously and finding it quite addicting. Waiting For Love is my favorite, next to Maid For Love, which is the first book in the series. However, just because these are my favorites, they only nudge out the rest by a very small margin!

This is Adam McCarthy’s love story, the last of the siblings to fall in love. When I found out that Abby Callahan was the heroine, I was not sure I would enjoy this book very much. It’s not that I disliked Abby from the previous books, but I thought she had already found her happy ending with Cal Maitland, since she left the island to be with him.

I was so wrong! Adam and Abby are perfect for each other. Abby’s character has definitely received the short end of the stick in the romance department to say the least. First, she suffers her failed long-term relationship with Grant McCarthy and then she fails with Cal, and both for the same reason, lack of attention from the man she loves. This has her wondering if she will ever find someone who will put her first in his life, instead of second and even third.

Abby decides it is time for some changes. She has been a good girl all her life, and it has not gotten her what her heart desires. Abby is determined to drink too much, have meaningless sex and swear, all behaviors, kind-hearted and sweet Abby has never engaged in before.

Adam McCarthy has had the rug pulled out from under him. His long-time girlfriend has managed to push him out of the company he founded. Not only is his heart bruised, but so is his pride. When he overhears Abby talking to a captive audience on the noon ferry to Gansett Island, he is determined to rescue her from herself. If she is so determined to set out on this destructive path, he will just have to be her willing partner in crime. After all, some mindless indulgences may be what he needs as well.

After days of fun and mischief from skinny dipping in the moonlight to getting a tattoo with Abby, Adam begins to see she is the right woman for him in every way. However, Abby is set on spending the rest of her life on Gansett Island. He has a company to get back on the mainland. Could he give up his life in the city for the woman he has fallen in love with?

I do want to mention the narration by Holly Fielding. I thoroughly enjoy Ms. Fielding’s performance, and she does a great job giving this multitude of characters distinctive voices. She reads with emotion and brings the characters to life. However, there does seem to be some background noise in some of the recordings. Not enough to distract, but enough that I noticed it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Waiting for Love and can’t wait to read the next book in this heart-warming series. I love getting a chance to see the other characters growing in their relationships. Since Ms. Force writes “happily for now” stories, there are wonderful opportunities to extend the previous characters’ love stories. This is a series about a town along with a lot of great characters. I highly recommend these books. I am confident you will fall in love with Gansett Island and its wonderful residents, as much as I have. Happy reading!

Excerpt:

All I could hear was the cracking of the branches and leaves under my feet. Dodging the trees and trying not to fall, I ran as fast as I could. The quicker I ran, the harder my heart pounded against my chest. I didn’t hear him anymore, but I knew he was still behind me. I could feel him getting closer.
When I saw an opening in the trees I turned and headed toward it. I felt like everything was going to be okay. I walked out of the trees into the bright moonlight, just to find myself teetering on a ledge.
A cliff? Are you kidding me?
It was a good three hundred foot drop into a canopy of trees. I wouldn’t survive the fall. I started searching for a way out of this. I looked from side to side and saw that the cliff extended for miles with no bridge in sight.
“Liliana,” he yelled, drawing out my name. He was getting closer. “You can run, but you can’t hide.”
I didn’t have much time. I started to panic as soon as I saw his shadow in the trees, and before I could take off he emerged from the tree line. I immediately took a step back, almost losing my balance. I couldn’t make out his face, but somehow I felt connected to him.
“I told you,” he said as he caught his breath, “you can’t escape me. You are mine.”
He lunged forward and I startled awake.

Excerpt:

The magic hissed in fear and anger. For a moment it considered attacking, but there wasn’t enough water left to drown her.

Also, it was Sera. I didn’t hurt Sera.

I stumbled backwards as reason slammed into me. I wrenched the threads of magic toward me. They twisted in my core, displeased, but at least I controlled them. It had so nearly been the other way around.

Sera’s movements were hesitant, as if she approached a wild beast, but her eyes were as determined as ever.

“I’m back,” I said. My face was red and my heart pounded like I’d just sprinted a mile, but I’d come back. This time, at least, I’d come back.

Sera studied my face for a long, silent moment. She returned the syringe to the black case and tucked that into one of the kitchenette’s drawers.

Carmichael and Vivian watched me as they would a stranger. A stranger who might try to eat their liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti.

“Really, it’s me. So long as I’m not using the magic, I’m still Aidan. I didn’t slide any further down the sanity slope.”

They looked unconvinced.

“We can’t just use the drug every time.” I attempted logic. “It knocks me out for days, and we can’t afford that.”

“I’m all for knocking you out, but we don’t have enough left to do it whenever you’re an idiot.” That might have been Sera agreeing with me.

I gave her a shaky smile. She slapped my face.

“Hey!” It only stung a little, but allowing her to slap me whenever she thought I was stupid wasn’t a precedent I wanted to set.

Vikki’s Musings

When I read the book description for Finding Gabriel, I found it intriguing. I always enjoy dark dramas with plenty of passion. I am glad I agreed to accept this book in exchange for an honest review. Finding Gabriel gave me a glimpse of what it felt like to be in France between the Treaty of Fontainebleau and Bonaparte’s escape from Elba. I have read a great many regency novels set during this time, but only a few set in France.

Ariah stumbles upon Gabriel at the edge of the river Seine with one side of his face destroyed. With the help of her sister, they pull him inside her house. Little does she know, this stranger will change her life forever.

When Gabriel awakens to discover he is still alive, he believes he sees an angel. Although, he soon discovers his angel is a flesh and blood woman. As she nurses him back to health, he falls irrevocably in love with Ariah and her sweet little daughter.

Is it possible for two damaged souls to find a love that can heal their troubled spirits, or will circumstances tear them apart?

This book had me sitting up straight and taking notice from the first page. I love it when a novel drops me into the middle of either action or intense passion and this one did both. The pacing is quite good for most of the book, and the unfolding romance between Ariah and Gabriel is very satisfying, keeping me vested in both their characters.

Ariah’s character is captivating, and I fell in love with her right away. Her fearless determination and willingness to risk bringing a stranger into her home is actually astonishing, considering her past history. I shall not give any details, but her trust in men was defiled at a very young and impressionable age. Not only is her character compassionate, she is also a very nurturing friend and mother.

Gabriel’s character starts out in deep despair, to the point he places a flintlock pistol in his mouth and pulls the trigger. At first when he discovers his suicide attempt failed, he is angry, but as he gets to know Ariah, he realizes she did him a great favor by saving his life. His story is one of redemption. I felt his pain over the loss of his family and the guilt he experienced because he wasn’t able to save them.

I did have a couple of issues with Finding Gabriel. I would have liked to know more of what drove him to such despair so many years after he lost his family, more of the tragedy of battle, loss of comrades, whatever it was. There were several instances where Ms. Demeter’s word choices pulled from the story. She has Ariah’s tongue dueling with Gabriel’s in a passionate tango. The tango is a dance that became popular in late 19th century, well after the period of history this book is set in. Also surreal is a twentieth century word.

Nonetheless, the few problems were minor and did not take away from my reading enjoyment. If you are looking for a story filled with deep emotion and a beautiful love story, then you will enjoy Finding Gabriel as much as I did. Happy reading!
